OK Guys and Girls, I have a "nerdy" request but somewhere I hope that one of you will know to work this out.

My day job has me working on highway and transport aspects of planning applications and on a particular scheme it has been suggested by some local objectors that the ramp up from the basement car park will mean that light pollution from headlamps will disturb the upstairs bedrooms of properties that back on to the development site.

If I draw a line at headlamp height following the gradient of the ramp it hits a boundary wall and a couple of trees before it "hits" the building in question - so there will not be a direct shining of lights in to the property. But how do I account for the spread of indirect light?? The windows are approximately 40 metres away from the ramp.

Apart from actually simulating this in night time conditions I'm not sure if there is a technical answer to this.

You should be able to use a cone shape to simulate direct lighting. Indirect lighting may prove more difficult, but should be overcome by the addition of floodlights in the car park, thus negating their objections smile

Perhaps a large advertising hoarding directly opposite the ramp may have similar properties?

It might be best to use a 3D graphics programme that supports radiosity. Pretty high powered stuff though, and needs a fair bit of skill and experience to use. Failing that, model it with cardboard?

And remember to test for HIDs and LEDs as well as normal lamps.

Thanks all, how do I work out what the cone of light will look like. There is, presumably, MOT related requirements for headlamps.
