Been doing some car insurance quotes for my car to see if i can get cheaper.

Currently paying 900£ as im 18, joy.

I went on a comparisment website and they quoted 3K for the cheapest! My details havent changed no convictions etc... but its increased by 200%

Have all 18 year olds suddenly lost the ability to keep a car on the road?

Try getting some quotes directly from the insurance companies.

I know how you feel, currently learning to drive but been looking at quotes for different cars for a while.

6 months ago an E36 316 was £1700 a year, now it's over £4000! That's with all the same details except dates, even with same company.

Maybe! What are the loss ratios for your age group for the past year? Motor insurance rates are going up, but there are still lots of different insurers in the market; quite a few brokers who deal with motor insurance are on PH, try contacting one of them?

Also, have you thought about mitigating your risk by having some additional security? I recently had a tracking device fitted to my car (cost me £450-ish), and almost immediately received a refund from my insurers for £12!

Alternatively, have you thought about taking some advanced driving tuition? I did a Ride Drive day a couple of years ago, which was c.£300, and got a 25% discount on a motor quote from Adrian Flux. Paid for itself instantly and I got to hoon about at Bruntingthorpe!

I have never paid more than £400 for car insurance.

You're driving the wrong sort of cars. Either put up with it or get a tuned classic/crazy kit car.

Not to mention downright rude. Called them for a quote on my MGB GT a few months back:

Me: "Oh hi, I'm looking for a quote on my 1976 MGB GT"
AF: "No problem, just a few details please"
-Assorted details are relayed-
AF: "And your date of birth?"
Me: "13th August 1992"
AF: "What car are you looking to insure again?"
Me: "An MGB GT"
AF "-Laughs- you must be joking!"
Me: "What?"
AF: "You're seriously wanting a quote on a 1800cc car at your age?!"
Me: "Yes...Footman James have already quoted my £860"
AF: "Are you sure you're telling the truth?"
Me: -Hangs up and vows never to use Adrian Flux again-

Unbelievable behaviour from the phone monkey. Now give me some free insurance in compensation for my hurt feelings, or I'll call HurtFeelingLawyers4U.

Insurance is a gamble. At 17 I had a 2.9 V6, so why the fuss over a 1.8 hehe

Look at the thread on here with young lads in Nobles - for peanuts! Turbo V6 lightweights, not some little 1.8 !

Had a modified car few years ago, told them i had larger brakes with 'sport' compound brakes

AF: so you street race
Me: no, I just think if you want to make a car quicker you should make the brakes better first
AF: so if you're making it quicker you're going to be racing it
Me: I might go on the odd track day but no i don't street race
AF: Look, no one puts bigger brakes on a car unless they're racing it
Me: Look, no one gets customers with this sort of service *hangs up*

well atleast you didn't get as far as paying for a policy.

i (stupidly) payed them £2150 for a modified mk4 astra turbo, then sold it 2 months later, so cancelled the policy.

and only got £1400 back, as AF keep the years worth of commision if you cancel early, i complained they kindly let me off the £20 cancellation fee and said it stated this in my t+c's. which admitidly it does in the very small print in the documents i got after paying for the insurance.

complete and utter rip of £750 for 2 months insurance.

Not sure if there is any truth to this but..

I heard that due to all the crashes in the prologed snowy and icy period this winter, car insurance premiums have soared due to the high number of pay outs..kinda makes sense but I don't know the ins andd outs of insurance so ill leave that up for discussion.

Could be, pre christmas my insurance quotes were about the same as I am paying.

bn9af - when I bought my car I got a week's free insurance, provided that I went through the rigmarole of getting an annual quote from NU. Spoke to the nice call-centre lady who quoted me £1,300 and couldn't understand why I wasn't keep to buy even though I told her Flux had quoted me less than £600. Have had conversations with Flux about modifying my car and they've never given me grief - yet!

matt 2LT - I can sympathise with you feeling like you've paid our a lot of money for very little, but you did agree to abide by the firm's t&c's - but they should have explained all the small print to you before you bought the policy. How else would you know what you're agreeing to?! As for the commission, they did arrange cover for you, so technically they did their job and earned their money. However, they could have earned themselves some goodwill by doing the right thing and refunded you some of the commission.

balders118 - you're probably right. An company always passes the cost onto it's customers - otherwise they'd go bust really quickly!

Your problem is the ZR is classed as a sporty car which boy racers drive... I had the same problem when I had the Rover 25 and wanted to upgrade to a ZR... Insurance went up £400, I wasnt going to pay that much for tinsels on what is effectively the same car!!!

Hello. Sorry if you two have had a bad experience with us. If you have a modified car with more power than standard then adding better brakes does not make your insurance more expensive. We have lots of modified schemes and we insure cars with massive BHP so i'm not sure why anyone here would have spoken to you like that. If you can pm me any details i can look into it for you. Cheers. Ash
