Campaign free day before election day

I must have imagined this but I always had it in my head that campaigning was not done on the day of the lection AND the day before in order to allow time for reflection.

Obviously judging by this 36 hour marathon malarkey I'm way off plot on that. Is it the case on American elections and not UK or has something changed did I really just dream it up?
