Hi,

Posting a question on behalf of a mate. This evening my buddy decided to try and clear up the rusting on the hubs of his new drilled and grooved discs (Mtec chap on ebay i think).

He took a tin of GT85 to it with a cloth, (Think GT85 is like WD40). And ended up getting the stuff all over his discs.

Obviously now his brakes feel like crap, they work but dont have any bite. He took his car for a quick race around, hoping the heat/friction would burn it all off, but still they are pretty rubbish.

What can he do? Over the next couple days will it wear off / Burn off? Or is it worth getting the discs off and givings them a proper clean up.

Cheers in advance.

BTW Car is EP3 CTR, with 300mm discs on the front.

Buy a tin of brake cleaner (clue is in the name) and spray liberally on the discs and caliper.

Fairy liquid and engine oil. I have no basis for this claim, other than I want to know the results.

My garage recently stopped being sent holts, but own brand unipart brake cleaner..... spit would do a much better job.

MTB pads do the same thing when contaminated by oil - they squeal and lose all friction.

It isn't the discs you need worry about, its the pads. Take them off and sand a couple of mm from the surface.

And a liberal dose of brake cleaner on the disks.

You can actually boil the pads in hot water to remove the oil from them.... and this is actually true. I would follow up by big time blasts of brake cleaner on them too.

Also heard you can soak them in petrol for a bit, then set them on fire afterwards - the heat draws the oil out of the pad, and it burns off. Though your mate sounds like a bit of a mong so this probably isn't a good idea.....

The safest solution is new pads

Would you rewire your house if you had never done anything electrical before?
Why is it that everybody thinks they can change a set of pads or a suspension bush etc?
You have no idea how much grief I get from numptys who attempt an "easy" bit of DIY on their vehicles.
More often than not turning an easy job into a nightmare.

'cos it's dead easy to do and mechanics usually do it badly. How many mechanics bother to clean the calipers eh?

Tell him to stop being a girl and go out and give the brakes hell. He obviously wasn't trying hard enough last time. The discs get all sorts of crap (oil, diesel, tar, etc) on them during normal driving but using them cleans them up. You'll need to get them really hot though.

I do long distance driving and have noticed on occasions that the brakes really lack bite and power after a long period on the motorway without using the brakes. Our roads are covered in crap.

What you are saying is partly true. they do get alot of road grime and crap etc but not a direct blast of WD40!!
He will need to carve a good bit off the pads with a soft disc on a grinder and a good lashing of brake cleaner.
