brakes squealing

just bought a cerbera sp6

everytime i apply the brakes they squeal, im not sure if its one side or all of them its hard to tell. its really doing my nut in.
Is it the pads that arent bedded in or is it just something that performance pads do? Is there anything I can do to stop it?

Fronts?

Its probably the type of pad you are using. Clever Trever sell some anti-squeal shims that go between the pad and the caliper, longer lasting and more effective than using copper grease.

Couple of cheap/free fixes you can do are to put some silicon on the back of the pad, and/or chamfer the edges of the pad material.

so is it the pad contacting the piston that is causing the squeal then. I would have thought it was the friction between the ferrodo material and the steel of the disc.
Does the silicon not melt with the temperature?

Most silicone sealants are stable up to around 400 Centigrade - your brake fluid will be long gone by then!

so its silicon sealant and not silicon grease, and it goes between the back of the pad and the piston. ok cheers.

To be honest I have always found silicone a distinctly temporary fix for squealing or pad clatter as it tends to come unstuck after a few weeks. I have found the adhesive anti-squeal shims to be a permanent solution.

I tried the silicon route, lasted a few days. Anti squeal shims are the way to go. Dont forget you need to double up for the fronts, ie 1 pad for each piston!

I used the stick on pads, no squeal from my brakes any more.

thats all i need to know.

Ive done some research and the squeal is apparently a high frequency vibration between the pad, piston and caliper hence why the use of a rubber dampner reduces or removes the noise as it dampens the vibrations.
The type of pad also have a lot to do with it, some pads are ceramic others metal compounds.

Just thought id share what ive learned. Thanks for all your input

I had this problem a couple of weeks ago, used the silicon as recomended on here, and it works a treat.
