I'm getting married later in the year and I'm looking to have a platinum wedding bad. The jeweller that is making the other-half's rings has quoted £2500 for an 8mm court platinum wedding band for my ring. Looking on the net this seems alot. I may have diamond set into the band so it needs to be farily thick; however I've seen a thick 8mm court band online for just over £1500 from these people: http://www.platinumringcompany.com/store/pid_253.h...

Has anyone one had experience ordering something like this online? Are the jewellers way overcharging or are the rings on that site of lesser quality to warrant the price differential?

Thanks,

The Doctor

seems a lot. Mrs CVM and I have platinum rings. We didn't pay that much.

have you considered the other noble metals like rhodium or ruthenium?

Hi Doc,
We used these guys. Good service, they come to the house and size everything. Everything is customisable and nothing seems too much trouble. 6 months interest free tick helps too wink

Edit: - My band is made out of palladium, half the price of platinum, looks the same and is just as hard wearing.

I think I paid a little under £600 for mine, which is about 5mm I think.

i prefer palladium to platinum, it is much better at catalysing C-C bond formation too.

Chemists think alike!

What he said. I'd be interesting in a titanium bronze myself, funnily enough, it's pretty much as strong as the highest quality crankshaft steel.

Speak to Nightmare on here - he's very helpful.

In the end, I didn't use his services but it was not for price or quality reasons.

I too would suggest thinking about your material. I went with Palladium in the end but a heavy weight one as I couldn't see the benefits of Platinum over it other than knowing it was platinum.

Friends have used smoochrings aswell - they were very happy with what they got.

One thing to bear in mind when using a platinum ring. Idiots keep asking if it's "white gold or silver" rolleyes

I went for Palladium. It looked the same to me but was must less to fork out for. The wife got Platinum though, as she has small fingers.

Not sure why that makes them idiots, a fairly reasonable assumption for someone to make? It shouldn't matter what others believe unless you buy platinum to show off your wealth.

We paid £1700 for 2 rings, and tuition in making them ourselves. Wedding ring workshop, in Hatten (sp?) Garden. For that price you get a whole day being taught how to make them (its actually very easy), 27g of platinum which is enough for normal sized rings (you can pay for more if you need it), and champagne.
Its great fun, using powerful presses, very hot blow torches, that sort of thing, and what you end up with is unique and personal. I made MrsJimothys, she made mine. Much better than buying 2 off the shelf.

Wedding bands seem much of a muchness as there aren't generally any diamonds involved.

We trailed around various jewellers but their markups were laughable.

Got a pair of platinum rings from http://www.weddingringsuk.com/ in the end. Quick, friendly service and no quibbles when we decided to return one and swap for a slightly different size.
