Hi guys,
Would welcome any experiences/guidance you have on this:
I'm off to the US on Tuesday with the girlfriend and she's just discovered she's lost her passport. She had it two weeks ago but can't find it anywhere in the house or car...trust me we've spent the last 8 hours looking for it.
She's booked into the local passport office on Friday to submit the application and the lost/stolen passport forms...but I'm aware that lost/stolen passports are not eligible for the same day service and 7 day fast-track is the quickest option.
Told her to put on an oscar winning performance to get it same day but any other advice or experience of this situation?
Cheers, Richard

By 'lost', do they mean whereabouts unknown or do they also mean it no longer exists? Why tell them it's lost/stolen if that then prevents you from using the fast track process to get another one?
Can't you just say it was destroyed in a fire/flood or something?
Don't give up hope of finding it. I was on the verge of cancelling an airport taxi because I couldn't find mine. At the last minute I remembered I'd used it as ID at a birthday party (venue was a casino) a few months previously - the passport was still in the trousers that I hadn't worn since.

They widely publisise the same day service is unavailable for 'lost' passports, but I can tell you thats not true.
They could decide not to do it in a day when you get there, but chances are you rock up, pay the bill and it'll be done in a day.
If you decide to go with her there is a good pub just opposite the passport office :-D

Don's forget you need a new https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/esta.html to go with your shiny new passport.

Hi Chaps,
Thought I might give an update just in case anyone is in a similar situation in the future.
All sorted :-)
Things they don't tell you:
1) You need a crime report number for them to act on it even if lost - you can get this by calling up your local 24 hr police service.
2) Bring printed evidence of your flight booking.
3) It can be turned around the same day - even though they don't mention it on the website for lost or replacement passports.
4) For passports issued before 2001 they are not on the digital database so they have to send a request to the archives which can take more time (add's a few hours) otherwise 3-4 hours is realistic.
Cheers, Richard
