Why aren't voting more simpler?

Excuse me for being a mong when it comes to politics. Somehow I don't quite understand that potentially during this election, a party with the most votes may not get elected as the new Government? All this talk about them projecting the Conservatives with the most votes would still result in a hung parliament. Bloody confusing and unfair system if you ask me.
You don't have a football match with say Man Utd winning 3-1 against Liverpool with the win handed to Liverpool because they had more possession through the whole game despite losing more goals...!

However over a season Man U won 307 games and Liverpool won 255 games, yet Liverpool scored 200 more goals. The result wouldn't change. I did some sums earlier based on county wins, the majority constituency winner in each county takes control of it.
2005 elections based on these maps - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_genera...
Conservative control 24 counties
Labour control 21 counties
Liberal Democrats control 1 county
Wales and Scotland were tricky to split up but Labour had more constituency wins in both.
