Moved into our new gaff last week and our existing leather 3 seater sofa is about 200mm too long to fit in the living room! Bugger.

It's a really quite massive 3 seater mind.

It's an Ikea job with a metal frame base and I was wondering if it's realistic to think I could have it made shorter by an upholsterer type chap and how much this would cost roughly?

The alternative is to buy another sofa obviously but this one is nice, and cost about £1k too. I need to weigh up the potential cost of having this one adjusted to just buying a new one and Ebaying the existing one.

Any ideas?

Dave,
Had a similar problem ourselves. Moved into our new home which has a bay type window recess and our sofa is about 4 inches too wide to fit into the gap.
My wife spoke to a upholsterer who said that it was possible to shrink the sofa to fit, although depending on the type and complexity could be anything around the thousand pound mark. (Although ours has a wooden frame structure.)
Still contemplating whether it is worth it. Matches the other sofa so really did not want to but a new one.
Regards Adam

I think it would be easier to sell it and buy new.

We have a sofa which is around 7 feet long, certainly more than 6 between the arms. When it wore out I spoke to an upholsterer and we ended up having it completely recovered. It cost £1500, much more than the equivalent new from DFS, but I'm still delighted I went down this route. Quality always costs.

Well I had a chat with a local bloke on the phone and he roughly guessed it would take him a couple of days at £100/day. So a couple of hundred quid. Seems too cheap that really.

Only trouble being the metal frame base as he has no welding kit. I've a mate that could sort that though. But, the Misses just wants to buy a new one and re-use this when we extend so might be a moot point now anyway.

Thanks for the replies.

The phrase 'smashing up a boat to make a raft' comes to mind smile
