Hi
I have finally got round to signing up, just thought I would start with my cars
My daily driver is a '91 E36 325 iSE i swapped for my mk2 golf GTi which was great because i paid £200 for it and basically gave it a polish and swapped the wheels with a friend.

and the golf


My other car is a 1966 Mk1 Cortina GT which i have had since i was 19, the engine siezed nearly 4 years ago and i decided that i loved it too much to break or sell so its going through a full resoration - i havent got that far because a few months after the engine died i moved out of my parents house in Nottingham to Huddersfield for uni
I spent my final years dissertation developing the original engine through engine simulation software made by Ricardo, i am looking at fuel injection and an Eaton M45 because the shorrock superchargers used in the 1960's are pretty much swarf now!


when i first had it
its a good job I decided to restore it as I found the following holes

(above the rear axle)

the rear spring mounting - on the same side

the boot floor had a nasty looking repair that was like a patchwork quilt

the rear panel

after i had removed most of the chassis leg

the engine when i bought it

the reconditioned head - I have spares to play with

after being machined
I swapped the original wheels for close ratio 2000e gearbox (Mk2 lotus cortina spec) I was told it had problems getting into second which i thought was synchro based but it was far worse - turns out all the spares i bought in the past I had the right bits to get the ratios i need


I want to get the rear end welded so I can start painting the underside and fitting the suspension - which I am half way through poly bushing. It had spax shocks fitted to the rear not long after i bought it and the fronts have been sent to gaz for coil overs but i dont have any pics of them though

I liked the golf it was an 8v with a full stainless exhaust, koni adjustable shocks with eibach springs and good rich hoses
the downside was it had done 190K and was showing its age - and I didnt need another project, the new owner has had a few and is going to give it a spruce up which is good

Bit of a quick update:
the Cortina; I have finished removing and unpicking the chassis leg, inner wheel arch and tieded up the boot floor and it I have a guy coming over to do my welding and hopefully teach me some basics in welding and fabrication
I have been re bushing the suspension and I need a new more bits before I can put it all back on - I need to take some pictures of them and my coilovers
the BMW; Just got back from le mans and the ring - I did about 1700 miles, again I have pictures but I need to sort them out, but I now have a fault with the OBC as it seems to think the outside temperature is -37 which is funny but annoying as it keeps beeping at me

Dunlop D1s are MUCH cooler that Minilites!
The OBD problem on the 3 series sounds like it could be down to a flaky temperature sensor. They're not expensive. I don't know where they are on these, but it is likley to be at the front somewhere.
thanks for that I'll do some research on that, I prefer D1's I think minilites are on every other classic and the price of Lotus steels is ridiculous although the price of D1's has shot up since I got mine!The OBD problem on the 3 series sounds like it could be down to a flaky temperature sensor. It has been a few weeks but there has been quite a bit of progress made with the cortina - for the first time in a few years things are starting to go back on the car as I managed to find a guy not far from home who needed some bits for a zetec conversion on his mk2 cortina in exchange for his time to do some welding for me


















over the last few weeks I have been spending a lot more time on the cortina in between either getting on a grad scheme or waiting to go on a masters, I have finally finished removing all the underseal from the floor and I have painted red oxide on it


from there I decided to bare metal the engine bay as there are a few jobs that need to be done in there at some point and I wanted to see how much filler there was from when the strut tops were replaced a few years ago, the answer to that was too much and it really wasnt needed - the welds ideally need to be ground down slightly and it would blend in with less fuss





the drivers side inner wing towards the front of the car needs some work as its not very level but its only cosmetic work to be done in here

I have started to recondition the steering and suspension componenets, as I posted earlier on I have decided to uprgade to polyurethane bushes to stiffen up the car a bit although the bushes i did remove were very worn I figured it was worth doing it properly

I also removed the old master cylinders when I was removing the paint from the inner wings and noticed that the new master cylinders do not have the same push rods so I decided to change them over

I finally have a complete boot floor! Lenny (the guy who has been doing the welding for me ) bought his spare welding mask this weekend and gave me a crash course in welding I was surprised with how easy it was but then you were a much better teacher than the guy who taught us at college,
We had a good day yesterday with the boot floor, It took a bit of head scratching to get the curve right where the boot meets the rear quarter panel but we used a french curve that has been sat in the garage since the dawn of time and it worked out really well

I placed the battery tray in to see how it looked

what my welding looked like - i was really pleased on how it went considering i have only had 20 mins with one

and I even managed to get an action shot of me doing it

i found a pen under the car a few weeks ago and thought I would try it out and give the cortina a GT badge

Lenny managed to get good penetration with the welds

this morning i built up one of my ball joints, I need to order another kit for the other side but at least one of them is done

It was my birthday monday and whilst I was back at my parents this weekend my mum organised a birthday cake for me with a woman she works with, she made me a cake when i graduated in July but it isnt as cool as this one
