GT3 Mk1 vs GT3 Mk2.............
Discussion
I've just finished reading this month's Evo and its comparison between the 1999 and 2003 GT3s. Basically all the journalists bar Meaden preferred the Mk1, mainly because of its allegedly superior turn-in charactaristics. They didn't miss the extra shove of the Mk2's engine too much.
So this got me wondering, which car would be the better purchase? From a financial point of view, the Mk1 has done a lot of its depreciating already, which is obviously a good thing. RHD ones can be bought in the mid 50K's which is starting to look like good value.
Then there are the looks. I reckon it's a dead heat. At first I thought the Mk2's wheels looked a bit Halfords. Now they have grown on me. Same goes for the newer car's rear wing. I've always really liked the Mk1's wheels however, pity I couldn't find the right Boxster S with them on.
"What the
is he going on about price and looks for?"....I bet you're thinking. It's because I haven't driven either one. But this is the kind of Porsche I see myself in next time around.......or the 996 TT!
So what do you reckon?

Johnny,
I've just bought a RHD mark 1 GT3 Clubsport (in speed yellow)and my reasons for buying the earlier model were (a)Most of the motoring press are of the opinion that the handling of the mark 1 is just a little bit sharper (b)the mark 1 was only made in very limited numbers (I believe my clubsport is one of only 28 and may depreciate less overtime and (c)I can't stand the spolier on the mark 2!. I've only had my car a short while and due recent poor weather I haven't used it much yet but I love everything about it apart from the poor ground clearance.
The only real weak point with the early cars is the brakes which are fine for road use but are not really that good on track so I'm told but that's not too big a problem to fix.
I the extra grunt of the mark 2 would be nice but I don't find mine lacking performance.
Go buy one!
Geoff

porschegeoff,
Brilliant choice. I like the zanzibar (sp?) red. I would like the CS version as well.
Do you drive it every day?
Yeah, I forgot to mention the brakes thing. Are you going to go for the extra cooling plus better pads method (I think I'm right here) or maybe put the 6-pots of the Mk2 on? Or something else?
Does anyone know how much these kind of upgrades cost?

Johnny I saw a GT3 in a kind of metalic orange/red But it was more orange to be honest.
If thats zanzibar red go for that one looked absolutely amazing.
Mind you I have a thing for orange Porches
Zanzibar - here it is..
Looks like a baked bean...

But its too orangey for crows.
Johnny,
I've got a very boring Peugot 206 that I drive every day. The GT3 is for weekends and the occasional trackday. You could use a GT3 as an every day car at a pinch but the low ride height is a bit of a pain, the ride on bumpy B roads will give you blurred vision and the clutch is on the heavy side for town traffic.
The 996 TT is undoubtidely a better everyday car if your budget allows or failing that I think I'd go for a 996 C2 with the power upgrade, sports suspension and sports exhaust or maybe a 996 C4S though these seem quite expensive.
I haven't decided on what brake upgrade I'm gonna go for yet. I think I might find out what other Mk1 GT3 owners have gone for before i don anything.

Johnny - going back to your original question. I keep promising myself that one day I will change my 996 C2 for a GT3, but just can't justify it for practical reasons right now.
I have now resolved to change the C2 this time next year and go for a GT3 (clubsport if I can find one, otherwise with roll cage and harness added). Only dilemma is, Mk1 or Mk2?
Financially it's a no-brainer: where I live, Mk1's are cheap as chips. Even though the Mk2 will have been hit by some depreciation next year, I would still have to find a hefty slug of cash to trade up. Plus it doesn't look as good as the Mk1 IMO.
But the pull of a newer car with a better engine is strong and I too will be asking for first-hand experiences of driving them back to back.
Anyone out there who's driven both? Are well-used Mk1's feeling a little bit tired now or still driving as new?

Re cost of brake upgrades; only the fronts need doing, I'd reckon about 1500-2000 GBP would get some superb calipers/discs/pads/hoses etc. and sort the Mk1 out for track work. The brembo 6 pots fitted to the GT3 are a mere 270 GBP each, IIRC (I am thinking of chucking them on my Ultima).

Interesting. Thanks Dom.
Johnny, shhhhh.
If the Earl of Bolton sees this & then goes & reads EVO it will be all your fault. Coz he will be in a veritable rage that the scally wags have deemed the 993T worthy of its lowly position.
I mean not only are those wassen pumpen upstarts way further up the list there is even a bloomin' red-nought cle-Oh, a scooby doo, and another jap contraption placed higher up the list, yee gads man, hes gunna be fuming
Best get your tin hat on & hide in the bunker now

World War 3 is quite possible.....
I couldn't help thinking about PH's biggest 993 TT fan when I read the article. In fact, why hasn't he mentioned it? Where is he? Do you think he's all right? You don't suppose he's gone and done something silly, do you?
He's busy work wise at the moment.
And yes, he's bloody fuming about it.
He rang me yesterday and spouted off about it for ages. His golden moment was "y' know Greg, I don't know how it achieved such a lowly position. With my suspension, th extra shove, my GT3 seats amd upgraded exhausts, I've no idea how they could place it below some of the cars there"
"All good points mate, but you've mentioned all the UPGRADES you've had fitted. They tested a boggo 993TT, not some black fire breathing genetically modified car"
Expect a rant any day....
