Lost some water from the cooling system on my Mondeo 1.8 16v. Some steam coming from exhaust. Engine temps normal. Slight stumble on cold start, clears in seconds. No water leaks visible.
Does this sound like the Head Gasket has gone? I've had a quote of £450 to replace it, which considering it's a '98 Mondeo probably isn't worth fixing.
Would something like K-seal keep it going for a bit longer while I raise funds for another car?

It is definately the head gasket. Engine wouldn't turn over today, so I pulled out the plugs and turned the engine over. Water everywhere. Put plugs back in, runs great but with steam out the pipe.
It is not worth fixing, but does anyone reckon that one of those additives like Kseal would be worth a shot to keep the bugger running a bit longer?

I havent used it personally but somebody I work with has, I cant remember exactly what product it was, il find out on Wednesday though. You had to do something like run the engine for 1 hour, then leave it 1 hour, then run it again. It is not worth fixing, but does anyone reckon that one of those additives like Kseal would be worth a shot to keep the bugger running a bit longer?
It worked for them and is still fine now after 3 months.

Well, the K-Seal arrived on the 10th. It seems to be holding. This is now the 24th. Steam has stopped coming out of the exhaust. I am not having to fill up the expansion tank. ~~~~There is a sound of gas escaping from the left hand side of the engine. Sounds like the exhaust system, but maybe the head gasket is blowing to atmosphere. I will keep you informed.
I intend doing the ultimate test. Towing my caravan. If that does'nt show a f
ked engine, nothing will.

Update to this - The steam out of the exhaust is still no longer, and further to that, I have not had to top up the water yet. That is quite a while now.
I do have an oil leak, which may be part of the problem, and if I go past a close building on my near side with my window down, I can hear a slight blow type noise. I haven't looked to see what it is yet. Power seems to be normal.
As an aside, I've rebuilt my old caravan, saved myself £3000 by doing it according to a couple of quotes from caravan repairers. The point of this statement is I am about to drag the caravan about the country using this car with the blown headgasket. In three days time, actually. We'll see how I get on.

You used the correct sealer by using k-seal! I sell it in my shop & all the trade boys, mechanics & car sales use it as their little 'trick of the trade' & call it 'a head gasket in a bottle'.
Can even be used for a cracked block! One mechanic used it on his own car as temp measure for just this problem, with a view to doing the job properly, when he got time. 60k & 4 years later, still holding strong!

Well, that's what I'm hoping, getting time enough to save up for another car. I used to run Volvos, had some bad times work wise, had to run cheap diesels, then this Ford. Things are beginning to stabilize, so looking for a Volvo again to tow the caravan. V70 would do. K-Seal has held so far, water temps are a bit up, maybe 1 or 2 degrees but that is probably because of the thermostat. I have a spare if the temps suddenly go spastic.
