radio caroline, i'm 54 how come i cant remember it. just thought of this while hard at work thinking of how to avoid doing any work.
Maybe you never listened to itIf you are 54 now, you are probably a bit too young to have been the right age when Radio Caroline's popularity was at its height. Radio Caroline began to decline in listenership as soon as BBC opened Radio 1 in 1967. In 1967 you would have been 16/17.

A man who is 54 this year was born in 1956.
That means in 1967 he would be 11.
You're out by at least 50%.
Good job you don't do sums for a living...
Living on the east coast we had: Caroline, Laser 558 and Radio Mi Amigo. Mid-late 70's?
I know Caroline was upto mid 80s as I had a huge 9ft yellow whip antenna on the car (it was the craze) listening to Caroline on Southwold beach.
A close offshore lightning burst 'blew' the radio - Slight overload

My head knew what I WANTED to say but the computational part of my brain was missing a few neurons. Good job I'd taken Friday off from work.
Anyway, the fact that he was actually 11 or so strengthens my point. Radio Caroline would have had even less relevance to an 11 year old than a 16 year old.

I'm younger than you, but remember it well. Radio Caroline also did many roadshows (basically a rock disco, before rock discos were invented) along the east coast. I remember going to those up until somewhere around 1980, so you've got no excuse.Think I'll drag out 'The Boat That Rocked' for another slice of nostalgia.
I would also think your geographical location would have made a difference whether you listened to it or not.
The previous poster mentions the east coast - where the medium wave signal would have been strongest.
I was brought up in Ireland where the Caroline signal was very weak and almost impossible to hear.
Radio Luxembourg was slightly better (they obviously had a big sod-off transmitter) but once Radio 1 started up listnership for these two stations would have started a slide downwards.
