Noisy exhausts
Discussion
Last night I was in a car that got pulled over for
a) overtaking a car at 74 in a 60 (the driver was overtaking becasuse the car behind was right up his ass, unfortunately the car behind had flashy blue lights on top)
b) illegal plates (had proper ones in the boot ready to fit so got away with it)
c) having a non-factory fitted exhaust.
According to the policeman, sports exhausts manufacturers are in court beacuse all sports exhausts produce 50% more noise than they should. Does anyone know anything else about this?

Yeah but as we all know sports exhausts "are not for road use" ,ahem,![]()
I seem to remember seeing that on a tail pipe fitted to a bike I once owned. That was the summer I became proficient with the use of emery cloth

Regards the original post, I'm not aware of anything like this proscution taking place. After all, if the manufacturer says 'not for road use' its the responsibility of the owner. I wouldn't worry though, its not a goverment target just yet

All after market exhausts sold in this country have to have either a BS/CE approval marking on them which means they have been tested and type approved for noise and emmisions efficiency or carry a marking saying "not for road use" "competition use only" or similar wording the actual words aren't specified but the meaning has to be clear. If the manufacturer complys with these reqiurements they are in the clear. It falls back to the old legal to sell and own but not use cases.
As for noise levels thats bollocks it has been proven that the CE/BS approved cans fitted on new Ducati 996's are actually noiser that the limit and a non approved aftermarket can will often make them quieter !!!!!!!! but they have a kitemark so thats OK.
Also if ever a copper says your exhaust is illegal because its too noisy tell him to sod off. As long as it hasn't blown, is fitted correctly and has the rught marks there is nothing they can do and if he produces a dB meter an waves it near your arse end tell him shove it up his !!! its not legal for them to road side test as there are too many variables.

My mates got a tl1000r with art cans and it sounds the business , he takes great pleasure when he sees a car/bike that has been pulled over to pull in the clutch coast up then bang it off the limiter
ok its childish but bloody funny to see the looks on thier faces , in the next month or so i will be getting a new zx6r and that will have a noisy can , it seems ok for the chopper brigade to have them but as soon as you fit an aftermarket can to a sportsbike you suddenly become a criminal

Shame the Art cans are such poor build quality ! If he's been giving it too much large I would expect all the wadding to be shot by now with very little chance of a re pack. Going on a completly unashamed pitch here I've found the best English aftermarket cans to be Renegade. The build quality is top draw, they come apart to be repacked with nuts and bolts (not rivets) their after sales is superb and they have a genuine life time warrenty which is honoured by actually talking to the guy who owns the company. Every can is Dyno proved in development to give a genuine power increase and they sound superb. OK OK they did used to sponsor me but the kit really is top draw.
