Not sure what it is, but I don't think it's an optima mid. They had the motor in front of the rear gearbox?

Definatly not an optima mid.
Looks Mardave ish to me but saying that it could be a homemade special fitted with gearbox's and belts from another 4x4 model.

Need more close up pictures of suspension and gearbox.

I'd say the base and the bulkheads were custom made by someone and the suspension donated from A.N. Other car.
Was probably done to lighten the chassis and/or reduce the wheelbase.
How much did you pay?

Because I used to race ‘back in the day’ I think I can spot some bits on it!

The front wheels are PB ‘Maxima’ (I still have one of these sat in a cupboard in the house!) and the drive belt also looks suspiciously PBish!

The shocks and springs look like old Kyosho items as on the original Optima.

The battery mounting clamps are old Schumacher items.

As Mikey G said, could give you more of an idea with some close-up shots of the suspension.

It might be one of the original Optima’s that has been converted over to belt drive, I think there were a few of these about before the Optima Mid came out. But it has undergone a lot of changes along the way!

I might have to get some of my old models out, we can have a game of guess what it is with them! I’ve got an old, old unused Yoko Dogfighter, the first ones they made with chain drive and a gearbox that’s so long you could hear it sapping the life out of the batteries! Also got bits of a Horobo Zerda that was one of the first 4 wheel drive belt driven cars that didn’t have a body shell, just a roll cage.

Kyosho Optima Pro (not Mid) front and rear gearboxes (Pro was belt IIRC, else it's a conversion). Optima suspension. Kyosho shocks. Unknown chassis - probably home made.

Almost, I raced a Pro for a while. The belt conversion was after market, standard was a chain. But agree with the rest.
Mine was a good car & was competitive for a long while.

Yep, Optima came with wiper blade speedo and 540 motor and chain drive, pro had no electronics and remained chain drive. Belt drive was an upgrade - came as two replacement orange teflon diff outers and a belt. If it has PB wheels, then you could get adapters to replace the Kyosho pressure washer wheel attachments with a ballcup/pin/hub with three studs a la Tamiya Hotshot/Boomering/Mini Mustang/Maxima.

This is from memory and I can't see pick from work sorry, so am guessing...

ETA, yep, standard Optima, optional belt drive and GRP chassis. Chassis may even have been from PB Mini Mustang and drilled. Would have been worth a few bob when it was new and being raced! I made my own GRP chassis once and it was rubbish - I was only 12 and made it using a GRP car body repair kit from Halfords!!
