No. I'm pointing out that Senna and Keke (and Mansell) also went on charges where they gained about as many places in as short a time. But they did it in an era when it was far easier to overtake...

So you could argue Hamilton may well be better than they were and there's no comparison to be had. wink

Is it so hard to comprehend that a modern driver could be better than one of yesterdays greats?

I'm not going to turn this thread into yet another dull and rather boring "is he/is'int he" argument. It's been covered a million times already; and I think the consensus was that he is'int smile

This isn't a sarcastic question, i actually have no idea of the answer...

On Senna/Keke/Mansell, of their charges through the field, how many were from the back, to the front?
And, of LH's, how many were from the back to the, front?

As i said, no idea of the answer, but i'd guess most of LH's were stopped once he got to the top half-dozen?

It seems some people don't rate Hamilton, regardless of if some reasons to do so being slapped squarely infront of their faces?

Strange.

I rate him. Never made a secret of that, nor being a fan since *that* Formula Renault UK 2003 race at Silverstone, but gaining on average a position per lap, sometimes more, in this day and age is pretty damn special imo. Well, literally as I can only remember Webber doing it once on the first lap at Bahrain 2009, not much else comes to mind.

I remember Mansell gaining 16 places in 18 laps in France 89 and all of it missed by the French TV producer furious , but then Nige was an overtaking charging god. Also worth noting that Mansell and Hamilton have a very similar driving style though - the "Mansell-line" as I call it, narrowing apexes and sacrificing corner speed for a shorter distance, which may explain why they were both unstoppable when it came to overtaking.

I also know of Senna going from 14 to 4th in 4 laps in Japan 88, 8th to 3rd in 2 laps in Canada 93 and of course that magic lap at Donington 93. Keke going from 6th to 1st in 8 laps Kayalami 1985 and 5th to 1st in 2 laps (IIRC) Detroit 1985. All sounds pretty similar to me!

I was also at that formula renault meeting in 2003, seems strange now remembering lewis and his dad standing around in the team awning with no one bothering about them.

Yes, Lewis Hamilton is better than Nigel Mansell and Keke Rosberg was, and yes I was around at the time and indeed remain a big Mansell fan.

Yes, Lewises path to F1 was different to Mansells's and Rosbergs, though just like them he had no money. He had considerably more talent than Nige did when he was young though.

Great video. Lewis is great at the tough racing and overtaking, but he needs to get some smarts to beat his teammate this year!

Oh I was, very much indeed. The *rows* me and my pal used to have about Mansell and Piquet... btw I named our cat Piquet, but was disappointed in him when he struggled against Mansell, even though he still beat him to the championship. In fact i was much more into the sport then than now, they were good years, what with Jags racing at Le Mans and the Birmingham SuperPrix being on and all that.

I remember Keke well and liked him very much - nobody talks anymore about how he used to stand behind his car on the grid, in his yellow ICI overalls stripped to the waist with tanned chest and flowing locks - and bracelets - chewing gum and strapping his hands up with tape to protect them from the heavy steering and manual gearchange - i remember the blister he got at Monaco.

One thing that younger fans may not realise nowadays, was how much Mansell was *hated* by almost all and sundry at the time, particularly by the racing media, and this is something that is very much forgotten nowadays. Mansell's popularity was very much blue collar, or dare i say it, the baseball-cap-backwards brigade. Yours truly excepted, of course. (what am I talking about, i was a trucker... but never wore a baseball cap backwards... hmm.)

The middle classes looked down upon Mansell in the same way that they'd look at something on the sole of their shoes. They felt he simply didn't belong in the sport. But having said that, he is regarded now in a different light, which is only right because he did indeed develop, eventually, into a very good racing driver. The whingeing never stopped though, nor did his predilection to blame anybody and everybody for anything that went wrong.

He was very exciting on track though, and i've always loved a racer and have never been interested in the soap-opera side of the sport.

One thing was very clear though - when Mansell or Rosberg was partnered by some truly brilliant - like Prost - they looked well out of their depth and they weren't at the Senna-Prost level at all.

Mansell's personality (or lack of) held him back, something that hasn't happened to Lewis. It seems Hamilton has only ever had two things going for him - his talent and a personality that seems to charm those that got to know him. Thus he got money and support - which has created enormous envy, of course.

There is no doubt in my mind that in say 20 years time LH will be looked upon as one of the greats.

I will always regard Jim Clark as the best, but Lewis is a natural and anyone who cant see that is a poor judge.
