Its the OH's mother's 70th birthday at the beginning of June and we're heading off down to Devon (where she lives) to spend the week with her, combining a break for us and celebrating all our birthdays (OH's is the same day and mine is the day after).

We've already booked Champagne Afternoon Tea at Bovey Castle ( http://www.boveycastle.com/) as a surprise for her and she will be presented with a large bouquet of flowers when we are seated for tea but we wanted to give her something else.

Now we've hit a stumbling block as to what to get for her. My initial thoughts towards jewellery was rejected by the OH because his mother doesn't really wear a lot of jewellery and what she does have she rarely wears.

So we're stuck and any ideas or advice would be greatfully appreciated.

To give you some idea of personality, she's very active and does a lot of community work and charity work. She's also quite the traveller with regular trips on her own to the US and her charity work sees her take trips now and then to Africa with the other charity workers.

Thanks guys and gals.

Could you buy her an ipod and fill it with her favourite music? Ge tone with an FM radio built in so she can use it on her travels

Nice thought but not the best idea.

She's hugely independent in many aspects of her life but not when it comes to technology. We always have to correct the smallest of things with her computer whenever we visit and we always get told off for re-tuning the radio in the spare room to Radio 1 because she doesn't know how to get it back to Classic FM after we leave!

What, like an experience at John Lewis?

How about a yearbook and stick all her photos in it to documents her life?

Dose she have many family photos? Make an album of them for her.

How about a dvd with messages from everyone and maybe bits of film you may have from the past of family members.

Take some pictures of the day too and have them framed.

Or a gigolo....

the photo idea is good but getting photos would be difficult. we're in Northampton and she's in Devon so we can't just pop round and look for photos.
