Is the place to ask for any tips? I dare say theres a uk.gov site all about them but are there things I should know that aren't on the sites.
I may want to travel soon so I'll have to sell my soul and provide big brother with a photograph and some details.

Whether it's a straightforward process or one littered with trick questions that can't be answered again once you get so far through the paperwork. A bit like those tax forms, lol.

How soon? Leave the full amount of time if you're doing it by post. If you don't mind paying a bit more and are near a passport office, the same-day service is very efficient - book an appointment for first thing in the morning, be out of there in 20 mins, then go back later in the day to pick it up.

^ Thanks. No rush at all but I'm surprised they can do it in a day. That's pretty efficient.

Post Office offer a Check and Send service for a few quid extra, it greatly reduces the chance of a knock back due to a problem with your form filling skills or your picture.

I did mine a few months ago. The form was actually very simple once you'd established that as a straight forward renewal you only had to fill out a few of the tens of sections, include a couple of pictures and sent it off.

Biggest hassles in the whole thing are:-

a) The pictures. There are a number of things pictures will be rejected for which are not listed on the form or UKPA website. eg ears must be visible, not difficult for me with a regulation No2 all over shearing but a problem for the ladies with long hair.

b) Counter signatories. OK the rules have been relaxed but a lot of people don't necessarily know someone who qualifies as their signatory according to the ruls. lots of doctors no longer sign due to being wary about listing stuff such as their GMC number.

c) If you need an interview then getting it done in reasonable time.

Start early. I know people who have had 5 goes at the photos before Post Office check and send staff will accept them. even the PO staff are beginning to wonder why some photos are rejected and some accepted by UKPA.
