Dorset Mobile Gatso...........
Discussion
Little mobile Gatso parked up my road AGAIN!!
Been along for a chat, they are there because of complaints not due to accidents. One Plod & one Civilian in the Scameraship van which is hidden in a side road.
Black box on the side of the road, a flash light & a battery pack. I have a piccy of the thing if someone wants to see what it looks like.
Set at "just less than 40" in a 30 limit.
Also gleaned ref Bournemouth Essex Way accidents have increased since cams & 50 limit installed! & there are ALWAYS TWO units active on that road.

Reacting to complaints rather than evidence is a bit annoying.
That said, if it's a 30 limit and they've set the limit at 40 then I don't have a problem with that.
It's cameras on fast open roads that I object to. I get stressed with people hooning around our local roads at innappropriate speeds.

yes both places it does make sense to enforce a 30 limit, the waitrose turning is on a gentle bend and also caters for the library and a petrol station, while the fire station location is on a route the kids walk home from school, near where the path stops and they walk on the road for a bit, it would make sense for them to be there say 3-30 to 4-30.
hey, if they took the scameras away from the long, straight bits of NSL a-roads, maybe they could monitor sites like this more often?????

The scameraship have been using this road as a revenue earner for some time. last month they were 500m's nearer the village.
This unit is always hidden, ie the van is out of sight. I've seen it out late evenings too. Just a box on a tripod on the kerb.
The road is not really dangerous, but the few times I have stopped & spoken to them they have all the said the same thing. At 3-4pm they catch A LOT of school run mums (not my words) completely oblivious to the thing even when they went past it on the way to the school earlier. It's always their busiest time of the day.
Its also a bog standard Gatso unit same unit as is in the grey boxes.

OK, so they catch a lot of school run mums. Were they driving dangerously on this safe stretch of road, or just exceeding the speed limit? And wasn't there a CC recently who said he DIDN'T want to catch school run mums? Revenue, revenue.... a hard habit to break.
The cameras are not the way to to go about reducing the accident I fully agree as you may be aware.
But if the oblivious are clocking points up then fair enough!. Just show's who's watching the road ahead does'nt it?. Now if they are involved in the accidents then thats a diff matter, But somehow I doubt they are as they do a lot less miles than average I should imagine.
If your looking you'll spot the little blighter, but what might I miss whilst looking out for it? which is what I'm doing all the time now, effing camera spotting, I'd hate to find out what I'm going to miss one day.

I agree that drivers should be able to spot a non-hidden yellow Gatso on a pole, or even a correctly parked Talivan.
However, on this occasion as described above we're apparently talking about a small black box on the pavement. Now I've never seen a speed camera in a small black box, nor have I ever seen a police force publish a picture of what we're meant to notice and remember to slow down. I would therefore feel that this was simply a speed trap and not an attempt to improve road safety.

fair point. i wonder if the "Mumpties" they snap are the same ones who complained about drivers speeding past the schoolkids?
