I have tried to avoid posting a what car thread but I just cannot make up my mind.

My problem is, with insurance premiums on the rise, petrol prices going up and the fact I have netted myself a speeding ticket its become too expensive for me to run my current car.

I need something cheaper to insure, cheaper on petrol but still fun to drive.

It needs 4 seats so alas the MX5 is a wasted suggestion this time.

The main this is, it still needs to be fun. I could just go out and get a 1.2 fiesta and be done with it but i just cant bring myself to do it.

My maxiumum budget is 2k but nearer 1.5k would be better.

Ive looked at pumas and still interested in one but they strech the insurance a bit.

The obvious things like fiesta's, Polo's and Clios etc just dont float my boat.

Ive looked for Colts but they are few and far between, cars like a 1.6 mazda mx3 command a stupid insuance premium which is more than double my current one.

Im at a loss. Everything is either too boring or too expensive. I know its a matter of priorities and letting my budget and financial circumstances dictate what i could conceivably afford but I wont settle for a 1.2 bland box without a fight!

So, suggestions from the collective are needed!

2xMX5 + A Frame?

How cheap on petrol exactly? How many miles do you do?

If petrol costs are a problem what about LPG?

Failing that you'll have to put up with a stinky old diesel eg

See if you can find an old 3 series diesel, it will have done a few hundered thousand miles but they go well, rwd, put some new shocks on it and it will still be fun to drive.

Or a 306 turbo diesel late model.

Have you looked at some classic cars?

You might need to phone around a few places rather than internet it. But how much is insurance on a Dolly (Sprint), Triumph 2000, Hillman Imp or Morris Minor.

Ok they may not be fast, although the Sprint isn't bad (8.7 sec 0-60mph). But they ooze charm and have plenty of ability to spruce them up a bit.
