Anyone one or know one? Wife is considering a career change. How hard is it so get in? What qualifications are needed? What is the pay like? I am thinking film, theatre, media, fashion, etc.

She will need to work for free/TFP until she gets a very good portfolio together.
Then she might be able to start charging.

Expect it to be very difficult. Unless she is naturally brilliant with make up.

I know a prosthetic make up artist - not exactly the same thing, I suspect. He's my brother in law's brother - a bit of a tenuous link!

He's pretty successful now (Dr. Who, Torchwood, for example) but he had years of not doing a lot. Qualifications - I think it was Art CSE.

He runs courses now for people who want to get into the business - he has a waiting list of people who want to get on the courses: http://www.gortonstudio.co.uk/

This may be of some use: http://www.makeupmag.com/

I know several and 1 of the best known in the industry... and my ex was one... They're all mental for a start but that's not very helpful wink

Tell her not to bother... It's like hairdressing very few people make a decent career of it... Mostly they get paid st and get treated st. only if it's an absolute passion would I suggest it's worth persuing and then there'll be ridiculously long hours for crap money or no money on test shoots and such, followed by people taking the piss paying up and unreasonable demands. At the lower end of the industry they're all stabbing each other in the back to get work and it's as false as fk.

Apart from this she'll want to try her latest lipsticks and st on you and make you look like boy fking george..

My ex was one, was a hell of a lot of work for not much money, as has been said before it involved travelling everywhere doing TFP work, don't know how she's getting on now but it seemed a very long process.

Cheers for the replies people - it is exactly as I thought it might be! Not sure the missus is cut-out for a world like that.

Back to the drawing board me thinks....

Excellent. This is the career my son is persuing. He's going to love it. Only yesterday he came home with a bag of new goodies, lipsticks, eyeshadows, nail polish. Last I saw of him he had a lovely deep red nail polish, and purple, or blue eyeshadow on. Stunning.
