We've decided that flying antwhere is out for the rest of this year, so I've managed to convince the missus that we need to drive to the continent - namely he Black Forest for out R&R this year.

So goof PH people - can you recomend me a good town/area. We'll probably go self catering in a small villa/house/apartment.

Some lovely roads around there, excellent choice! We did a driving holiday but as it was all pre-arranged I can't remember too much of the details I'm afraid. One of the places we stayed was Freiburg which was very pretty. The other place which was lovely was Lindau on Lake Constance but I'm not sure that is strictly the Black Forest.

We also drove through a German town which I believe is pronounced "Vank" but spelt a little differently wink Make for some comedy photos, but the locals don't find it too funny. Then again, they are a load of Vankers!!

The Black Forest is a beautiful area and quite large, my girlfriend studies at Freiburg University. Freiburg is nice for a wander round, Baden Baden is well worth a visit to go in one the spas and Lake Constance (debatable whether in the Black Forest) is stunning. You have to eat Flammkuchen while in the Alsatian part.

We were at lake constance last year and I can heartily recommend it to just about anyone. I recommend searching for ferienwohnung instead of hotels. We had a fantastic place on a farm in the middle of orchards.

I stayed in Schlitach in January at a place called the Gasthof Sonne. It wasn't self catering unfortunately but it was very quaint and had an in-house restaurant.
It's a very small little village and properly right in the middle of the forest, ie hills surrounding the village, steep roads etc. It may be too small - there's not much nightlife, but there are a couple of hotels with restaurants/bars. But if you want to do day activities in the forest and relax at night then it would be fine. I could have stayed there for a few more days easily!

But we did a little trip out of the village in the car and most of the Black Forest looked quite nice to me, I'm sure there's hundreds more places like the one I mentioned above smile
