The potential for a headgasket issue is completely over exaggerated by all and sundry. The later cars had mods to the headgasket itself, to the locating dowels and to the thermostat layout all simply to knock the 'pub talk' on the, er, head.
Simple preventative measures include not thrashing the car from cold and doing weekly level checks.
If you were unlucky enough to experience a headgasket failure (unlikely) then budget for around £350 to have it sorted at a reputable garage or £100 for the bits DIY.
