some Oxfordshire rag said:
Do you agree that the number of speed cameras in Oxfordshire should be reduced?
Yes. We don't need this many
No. Motorists can't be trusted to watch their speed

But no:-
c) Strict enforcement of completely arbitrary speed limits to the exclusion of all other road traffic policing is short sighted, potentially dangerous, and politically suicidal.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page if you can't see the poll. It's in the bottom left corner. So far the anti-cameras outweigh the pro-cameras, just.

"Motorists can't be trusted to watch their speed". Hello? thought I. Surely no-one will vote for such a patently nonsensical statement.

42%???? This country has truly gone down the pan if there are that many people out there who think "motorists can't be trusted". Next they'll be suggesting that all drivers should wear something around their necks to identify themselves to "normal" people...

SGirl, you're right. It's effectively saying "motorists can't be trusted" full stop.

It's interesting also that the statement is about "watching their speed" and not "driving safely". This reinforces the idea that speed is the only thing that matters for safe driving.

In Oxfordshire, that's been the case for a long time. Roads leading into the county have a sign saying "speed cameras countywide", which appears then to let them off the hook of having to have signs (only) within 1km of the cameras.

couldnt do that - it would be inviting people to incriminate themselves!
