Lusted.. Is that even the right word?

At work today, my mind started to wander and as it does started going into car mode.. I've been on and off been trying to change the car over the past few months, but can never really find something that fits the criteria. I started to think about the Toyota Auris SR180 (2.2L Diesel, 180bhp.. lots of torque) and on a limb I check usedcarsni.com to see if there are any for sale close by. Turns out there are about 5 at the one Toyota Dealership 30 minutes away.. I ring them up and they're open until 8pm.. So for the last few hours of work, I was like a kid on Christmas eve, I couldn't wait to get out of there and go check out the Auris!

I get there, and they have 2 black Auris' and a red one.. I take a look around, and then go and find a salesman. I drive an Auris at the minute, it's a 127bhp 2.0L which doesn't look that different from the flagship SR180 so I was going that the difference in performance would blow me away! Ended up taking one of the black ones out for a drive, let it warm up for a bit before giving it too much.. It seemed to have the same horrible lag that the 2.0L Auris has, but in the high revs it had alot more power and torque. I didn't get to push it too much.. I wanted to each time I touched the throttle but didn't want to ps off the sales guy.

The power was definately there, but it didn't feel that different.. And I drove it back to the dealership feeling slightly underwhelmed, and a bit gutted. I had high hopes for it.. But I wasn't sure if it delivered or not.

I talked with the sales guys for a bit about price etc, and then left it at that.. Still feeling pretty let down.. But when it came to driving my own car home, I noticed a big difference in power.. and it made me want to go back and drive it again. I'm not sure what to do about the whole thing.

The car ticks alot of the right boxes.. Power, insurance, comfort, size.. But it doesn't feeeel that much better?

Is it common to have high expectations of a car, even before driving it? Should I still be considering it, or should I wait until I drive a car that totally blows me away..

Hmmm. Is an Auris a car worthy of lust?

It's a diesel Toyota, I think you should really set your sights a little higher. How good were you actually expecting it to be?

I can't sympathise, I'm afraid. When I upgraded from my 1.4 Orion to the 1.6, it blew my fking mind.

Different people lust after different cars. I am an aknowledged Vauxhall lover!

As for your dilemma OP. Is it worth the Cost To Change? Its better, but is it 2k, 3k, 4k, better? If you are thinking about changing, why not try some of the VAG Group product? Golf GTD for example? Compare to that, might help you settle on the Toyota, might give you a better choice.

I actually had to go to the classifieds to see what an Auris looked like - I too am underwhelmed.

Oh. Er, maybe lust after something interesting next time?

I always fancied a BMW 850i until I drove my mates. Very underwhelming.

I guess lust wasn't the best word to use then.. biglaugh

I'm only 19, so no matter what the car is.. The Insurance is always the killer! I was hoping the Auris was going to be a big step in the right direction, more straight line power and speed as well as improved handling. It's only group 11 insurance too, which I guess is why my expectations were (wishfully) so high..

I went to view a Civic Type R (Again, at 19.. It's lusting), took it out for a drive and actually couldn't stop smiling.. But in the end up, and with problems with the insurance I had to walk away from it..

So ever since, i've been looking for something nicer.. that can be insured for decent enough money. And unfortunately anything over Group 14 seems to be off limits.. Which is why the Auris at Group 11 looked promising..

Never meet your heroes. Thats why an Escort Cosworth will allways be a 1:18 scale model on my window and not in my garage.

I wanted to like it so much but I just didn't. It wasn't special enough.

I would look for something around 4 years old.....simple to repair, cheap to insure and fun to drive......spend some time looking through the classifieds and set a budget and stick to it.

Start saving for the next generation Porsche or Lambo!!!

E-Type. Object of absolute beauty but handled like a narrowboat and braked like the pads were made out of jam.

How can you possibly lust after after the dullest car in a dull class of cars?

If insurance is such a problem, here's a clue for you - shout DON'T SPEND £20K ON A BORING DIESEL JAPBOX THAT IS ONLY FIT FOR LIBRARIANS, SPEND £10K ON SOMETHING INTERESTING, INSURE IT AND POCKET THE DIFFERENCE!

HTH.
