Thought I would start a new thread about my project to take the engine from this

and fit it to this

I have had the SL for about 5 years and it is not quite as nice as in the picture these days.

I picked up the C36 on bank holiday Monday, after a false start with a blocked radiator which I sorted over the last week I reached this stage yesterday:

Engine is now on my workbench for cleaning and polishing etc.

The next steps are to strip the C36 of all other component to be ebayed then scrap the shell (unless an ebayer wants it) then get on with removing the engine from the SL.

Driving the C36 over the last week has left me in no doubt that the engine will really suit the SL, it is a very smooth engine and not agressive so won't ruin the character of the SL but will deliver an extra 100 bhp or so.

On holiday for a few weeks now so won't be any more progress but will update this thread as and when.

Cheers

Ben

It will be interesting to see how this one pans out.Are the brakes on the SL up to the power of the c36,I take it they will have to be uprated?
Could you not just source the engine on its own-seems a bit of a waste to break up a healthy car?

The C36 was on the cat C register and from what I can tell was repaired to road legal status by a drunk gibbon working in his shed in the dark with a hammer so is no loss!

I will use the brakes from the C36 if they will fit, if not the SL's brakes were common across the range including the 560SL which I imagine had C36 like power but was heavier so should be ok. I will be re-building the suspension as part of the project so that will be able to cope.
