After a long time of no holidays for my and my family due to financial reasons, this year i am fortunate enough to be in the position to be able to go on holiday.

I was planning a trip to Calais in the May half term, but a couple of nights in the Holiday inn Coquelles followed by a night in the Ashford Holiday inn the whole trip is costing around £1000 with Eurotunnel crossing.

I am therefore tempted to add the extra and book a private villa in Europe with pool as this is only £2k via James' Villa's, this includes flights. This would be better in the childrens summer holidays.

Anyone know of a cheaper alternative to James's Villa's? Or perhaps someone has a villa that would let me rent it from them?

Requirements that it will need to sleep two adults and two kids (7 and 5 yrs), have a private pool and be in a nice location.

Any help appreciated.

We got a place a couple of years back through http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/ in Portugal. Nice little place near the beach, a short drive from Carvoeiro, and quite private with large gardens and a private pool. Villa was about £800 for the week in August and booked our own flights and picked up a rental car for the week to get around. All in for the two of us was about £1200-1300 plus spending cash. Not sure what prices are like just now but probably worth a look if you've got 2k budget for the week.

Louis.

Hi Rey

If you fancy Tuscany, we have a farmhouse/villa which has a private swimming pool too.
We are offering a 15% discount on our remaining weeks too.

We've stayed here a couple of times, excellent villa, stunning views of the Med, great for kids especially with the pool, only a mile from Mijas so your away from the booze cruise crowd, only downside is the fact that it's up a very, very steep hill. About 40 mins drive from Malaga so flights should be cheap/reasonable depending on when your thinking of going.

We book a villa every year for our summer holiday & use either:

www.sealandvillas.com

or

www.villaselect.com

Both seem to be cheaper & have nicer properties than James Villas

check out the usual agencies:

Gites de France

Bowhills

Chez nous

French Country Cottages

Britanny Ferries Holidays

They have lots of villas all over France; the Vendee is a good area for kids beach holidays, as is Charente maritime - both have decent weather, but not too hot, and not too long a drive.

If you take a ferry on the short crossing (Dover-Calais or Dover-Dunkerque) you should get a return crossing for less than £100 and will save a bundle on car hire costs and air fares, plus you will have space to bring back souvenirs.

If you want to drive further afield and need to stay in a hotel en-route, try Ibis or Novotel - kids often stay free and they are generally cheaper than US chains like holiday inn.

Check out www.viamichelin.com for maps and driving times.
