I have always ignored diesels because the few that I have been a passenger in sounded like tractors on tickover - so I was surprised to read this PH Driven report today:

"magnificent though the latest generation of supercharged V8 is, there's been nothing to match the effortless, near-silent waftery of the old 12-pot Jags. Until last year, that is, when Jaguar introduced the third generation of its twin-turbo diesel V6 to the XF, creating the XF Diesel S. Jaguar's AJV6 diesel has always been magnificently refined, but the latest iteration is also genuinely whisper-quiet and Casanova-smooth."

Surely this can't be true? At traffic lights in my much-missed V12s, I wasn't able to tell if the engine was running. Will someone who has owned both a V12 and the XF diseisel please add a dose of reality?

I can only suggest that their V12 was horribly broken...or it's typical journalistic hyperbole.

The 2.7 diesel in my S-Type is very quiet. The 3.0 in the XF is even quieter. Most people even some americans just don't realise the S is diesel. Is it quieter than a V12, yes it could be. It is a long time since I rode in a V12 but I think with the leading technology in more modern cars that the diesel is the quieter.

Mine does sound somewhat taxi-ish when it's parked at tickover and you're standing by the front wheels, but inside when driving it's at least as good as the 3.0 V6 petrol I had before, possibly quieter. And as my mpg has gone up from 26 to 45, I'm laughing smile

It's horsest, it's not even remotely as refined as the V12. Inside you can't hear it at tickover or steady speed, but from outside you're never in any doubt it's a diesel let alone if it's running or not like with the 5.3 V12
