Hi,

I am looking at a bundle like the one below:

http://cgi.ebay.com/D90-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-5-...

I have been borrowing my housemates D80 for ages and so want one of my own so thought to go for D90 and then with all the kit I'd need. I know the lenses aren't the best but thought that this way at least I get everything I need to start and then can upgrade what I end up using the most? My Dad did this with tools in the garage! ;P You know ... get as much as possible for me from bootsales etc and then replace what I find I always use ( socket set for example ) with high quality but at least for a modest outlay I won't be damning the fact I don't have something at all, when I need it?

I'd like to try some different styles and for the same money it seems I can only get 1 proper lens and I'd like the variety that this kit should give me?

Would love to know your thoughts.

Minus point: What do you do if the camera develops a fault? It's a US-spec camera (identical but may cause warranty issues, not sure)

Plus point: You can put all the cheap tacky extras back on eBay to recoup costs smile

Watch for import charges/VAT, which can make such offers the same price as UK stock.

Cheers for the reply. I wasn't thinking about the import charges. Does anyone know what they would be. If I could get this kit from the Uk I would be ahappy man. Any good places to get this kind of combo deal?

I think the kit is rubbish apart from the camera and 3 NIKON lens, not the adapter crap. so no worries. just get yourself a D90 and lens you want + a normal memory card and a bag.

Warranty on Nikon bodies and lenses is international but they will know due where it was purchased due to the serial numbers. Any problems and you will need to take it back to your retailer in the first instance, personally I would buy locally

+1 . I saw some refurb'd ones in ebay for a nice price. Don't know what kind of warranty does it have.

Personally, I wouldn't go with that bundle. There's a lot of stuff there which you don't really need, and which is going to be of such a poor standard that you won't want to use it. And regardless of how good the price looks, you are paying for it. Buy local, buy new or second hand, but simply buy what you need. Think it through, research, talk to your local shops and search ebay. You'll find everything you need and not pay for stuff you simply don't need. All the best D90 is a great starting point.

If the parcel has the true value declared on it (the seller may insist on this; even if they don't and it's declared at $10 you'll only get $10 if it disappears in transit) - then HMRC will pounce on it when it arrives and do you for (a) import duty (b) VAT at 17.5%.

Can't remember how much import duty is - 20%? - but if it happens it'll really spoil your day and wipe out any savings. Depends how lucky you feel. Oh, and Porcelfarce will charge you a handling fee as well.

Alternatively you can dump the cheap gadgets you don't need and buy from a pukka UK dealer like www.warehouseexpress.co.uk. If the camera goes bang, you ring them up and they send you a new one, no quibble. It really is worth the peace of mind IMHO. We all like a deal but there are times to do things properly smile

It seems that the body of a D90 is £650 from the place you recommended. I think the kit would all be useful, it has bags, remote controls, tripods etc?

I might try it, and hope I don't get stung for the duty as even with that in, its still so much cheaper than dear old Uk?

I'm basically looking to get the whole kit like the one in the link to eBay, but if I can pay more and get it from the Uk I would consider. At the moment its £855 + shipping + VAT + customs duty. I am guessing all in £1200? If anywhere would do that load of kit for £1400 I would have a serious think. Seems to be a big price discrepancy, as it looks like all that from the UK is £2k +

I would LOVE someone to prove me wrong and find this kit in the UK / Europe so I could buy it. ;P So PH, anyone know where I can get some kit from? I know the lenses are prob a bit cack, but I want to try them all and see what ones I want to upgrade as and when I start using it enough etc etc.

Seriously, did you actually put any effort in searching???

FFS Everything new and in the UK

Body £545

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-D90-BODY-BRAND-NEW-WAR...

18-55 £91

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Nikon-AF-S-DX-18-55mm-18...

70-300 £105

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Nikon-AF-70-300mm-70-300...

50mm £90

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-NIKON-50mm-f-1-8D-AF-Nik...

I can't be bothered to look for the rest of the crap from this kit, but I bet it's worth less than £150 (of which £125 will be wasted)

So 545+91+105+90+150=£980

Happy?

Steady on chap! You do have a point though smile

I did put some effort in but as I said I am new to this so thought that a kit *might* be the better option. I called them up last night, some companies are so weird. I was ( wrongly) ready to pull the trigger on the kit, but the guy was an @rse on the end of the phone. He wanted my eBay name and email before he would even answer a simple question. ( Can you ship it to me in under 10 days, as I am going on holiday soon and want it for that).

So, tried to give him the details and he could not understand the alphabet at all nor the military version Charlie Uniform November Tango. Offered no advice on what kit, just said to read the email and to just do it all through eBay. When I asked about customs shipping details so there would be no delay he started bangning on about how they can't hide it and won't lower the value etc etc. After 2 mins I got a word in edgeways and said I had rung up customs here and as long as there was a detailed itinerary with a breakdown of cost they could clear it in 24 - 48 hrs max, and its all about 4 - 6 % so no point in trying to muck about, just need it all to be clearly listed as its a kit and they need to apply different rates to different items. He wouldn't have it though, just said the price is on the box, deal with it.

Well I imagined what it would be like if this stuff is damaged or stops working and the delivery is $289 then +Vat + Customs I was looking at £1300.

So I am with you on this one, going to ditch some of the tat and just look about for £1200 worth of stuff on eBay and other camera sites instead.
