Good to see you all must of been out cruising today.
Aint it been loverly.
Right just a quick question to all u Tiv Boofs.
I brought some exhaust heat wrap to try and put on my starter to try and stop the heat getting to it.
Know i no i'm gonna sound like a right thicko now but as i haven't opened the pack yet(cos it might be goin back),but does it have an inner and outer side.
If it does then thats ok as i can put it on inside out to deflect the heat away from the starter motor.
If not its going back and I'll be trying something else.

If it's the stuff I'm thinking about, what you've got is basically woven tape that you wind around the exhaust, it doesn't have an inside or an outside and it doesn't reflect heat, it is just an insulator. The ideal stuff for your starter motor is quite different, what you want is a much bigger single sheet of material with an reflective layer on the outside. I've got this on the starter and around the alternator, which is mounted close to the exhaust on the V8S.

Simon,

Let me know how you get on with that heat reflector. Mine died (for about 5mins) last week on the way into work. Just had to stop and open our garage door - went to start her up again and the starter motor just coughed pathetically. No big deal at the time, but if I'd stalled in trafic, I would have looked a right plonker!!

The usual 'starter motor overheated' threads sprang to mind!! - Cheers PistonHeads Knowledge baase!!!

From what Pete says then i'll be trying something else.
I know from previuos threads there are companys who make These for TVR's but was trying to do something for myself.

Pete,

What kind of shield did u use a pre-made one or a home made one,If the 2nd what material did you use.

Try www.modwise.com Tel no. 01793 726541
e-mail info@modwise.com
They do TVR mods and have a starter motor reflective shield for £25.

Wotcha
It might be worth trying what you've already got but use it as intended and wrap the exhuast pipes, as less heat will be radiated from the exhuast when it's fitted. Remember to overlap it by at least 1/3rd of its width and use some lockwire at either end to secure it.
It'll also have the added bonus of lowering underbonnet temps, the downside is that your exhuast will run hotter under the wrap and if it's mild steel may be more prone to cracking than before. Also remember that the heat will stay in the pipe and any unwrapped portions of pipe will be hotter than before, so they may burn bodywork etc unless wrapped as well in the close fitting areas.

Yeah....I've got this on my Caterham alternator, to stop the exhaust manifold melting it, which it has done. I've also got it on the coolant header tank and various other bits and bobs. I'm thinking of wrapping my girlfriend's right leg in it too........aah f**k her
