Right all, I have an occasional MIL, for which I'm curious to see if any of you have had, or know possible solutions/ideas to.

So, fyi I have a 2001 Cerb Sp6. I love her. Yes I do. Now I will describe the MIL to you, in terms of the sequence of events. Please note I have had this phantom fault looked at and apparently when MIL occurs in garage, there isn't a code indicating a specific issue, hence the phantom nature of said MIL. And the excellent Mark of MF TVR over here doesn't know what it is and quite frankly I have less of a clue than the nearest discarded crisp packet anyway.

So then, to the phantom. I drive my car daily, mix of traffic/motorway. She gets warm in traffic and around 96 the fan kicks in. Cools down to 90, fan off, no problem, no phantom MIL. She will do this once more, only the once more, no MIL. The third time however, temp creeps up to 96, fan kicks in HOWEVER this time, MIL attempts to come on, it flickers it's ugly existence, coming off and on and off and on tormenting me until it finally makes it's mind up and comes on constantly. Car will warm up to 96, cool down etc. no problem, however MIL will remain. That is unless I rev her to 2-3000rpm, when said MIL will very briefly disappear, before returning when revs drop. The other thing is, she will idle at the expected ~8-900rpm in traffic for about 5-10mins after the MIL comes on, however if I'm stuck in traffic any longer, the revs start dropping and quite frankly she starts to feel like she's going to shake herself apart. Gearstick vibrations increase significantly, along with steering wheel however start moving again and no issue.

Further to this, if say I have cleared traffic when this has occurred and am back on motorway, after 5-10 mins of bombing along, the MIL goes off. Also, when I park her up and return next morning, no MIL. I'm paranoid anyway so water and oil levels are usually a canine with acne.

Any ideas?

Any other questions? Please note that while I may own a TVR, I'm not a petrol-head by any stretch nor would I ever dare say so. I am an veritable car-idiot certainly in comparison with the vast majority of yourselves and your input/ideas would certainly be welcome. Apologies for the long-windedness.

You have 3 options:
1. Plug in a laptop and see what the fault code is and go from there.
2. Take it to a TVR specialist to fix it for you (aka the fubar contingency)
3. Just shoot the mother in law and be done with it.

Ok, two options.

Farmyardpants -

First 2 options already done. Apparently in the TVR garage here, when hooked up to pc with diagnostic software, the MIL I have has no code.

And option 3 is clearly not an option. For shame!!!!

Mine was doing similar, turned out it was the throttle potentiometer sensor - cheap as chips to fix.

Hope that helps.

Are you sure there is no AFR fault code?

It sounds to me as the engine of some reason starts to change the settings of the engine after a while. Could be throttle pot, lambda sensor, bad setup or worn throttle bodies, but it should show a fault code.

Have you posted this in the speed six engine forum?

Repeat step 2 with a different specialist until problem solved.
Seriously I would try another garage.

The mother in law is supposed to light up/beep when there's a fault, and a code should be logged in the ECU.
If she is lighting up and no code is stored, that sounds like a wiring problem. Either way - time to call in the experts smile

Had a MIL light come on and off quite a bit on my first CERB A 4.2. It never went away' but also never caused problems, and was told by Dream Machines not to worry about it as they all do that sir! I asked them what MIL stood for and they said that they did not know. My latest Cerb a 4.5 has never had the MIL light come on. Well I have said it now!

Isn't it the malfunction indicator light? I prefer the other definition though.

from what has been said, to me ,it sounds like the oil pressure sensor is the cause of the mil light on a speed six cerb(rev it up and the mil goes off but when the revs die it comes back on) it will throw the mil on if it reads the oil pressure is below 4 psi, but this does not show on the lap top/computer(unless it has given up and would then show 131psi)if it was a tuscan 350 sag tam then it would show a low oil pressure warning on the dash, the cerb however does not,it just logs as a fault to the ecu, hence the mil.as for the revs dying after long standing in traffic i think that is another problem, bad set, poisoned lambda!!.hope this helps, and mark should know this!!!!!

I have a similar problem. I am awaiting a cable to plug the laptop in. If you read the manual for the TVR software the MIL light can be initiated by a few different things which will show faults on the software or at least you can see data discrepencies. The MIL itself is not a fault of the software. The most common faults it would seem is The throttle pot's, one for each bank so there are two. If they are faulty or end up out of tolerance from each other it will cause fault. The other is a faulty lambda sensor, which there are also two of, one on each exhaust bank.

Keep us posted if you get it sorted

There is a newer version of the lap top/computer software that shows the oil pressure measured by the ECU on a SP6. To see if you have this version of the software check if you have a file called ecudiags_patch.exe in the directory where the software is on your computer. The software has been developed and distributed by Varlehyd on PH.
It is correct the oilpressure sender is used for the oilwarning light, and the MIL light comes on at the same time as the oil pressure warning light comes on and no fault code is logged. The value for the oil pressure warning to be trigged on a SP6 is depending on the revs, higher revs trigger the oil pressure warning at a higher reading.

Nemasis, I think you may be on the right track.

I'm planning to visit Mark soon and will take all your suggestions. Natch I'll respond if anything is figured out.

Cheers all
