Travel Insurance

Who are you all using for travel insurance for Le mans? There is a mind boggling array of companies, most of whom I've never heard of, offering all sorts of cover options. Prices range from less than a tenner to hundreds.

Obviously I need someone with good cover for alcohol poisoning, food poisoning and Gendarme induced financial shock.

I got mine with insure and go, all kinds of insurance at very good prices. I got it for £19.00.

Insure And Go for me been using them for years i have a world wide Gold policy £72 had to make a claim last year when my camera was damaged while in OZ and no probs with payout plus no price jump to cover costs my premium went down.

I have the EHIC but have annuel cover with insure and go also for other holidays

The Ehic is ok for the medical care basics but it's no help if you get robbed or your ferry is cancelled.

Don't forget, most if not all car policies will not pay out if you crash you car of if its nicked. You will have to upgrade for this cover even if you are fully comp. Read your small print.

This has been covered a few times but worth anther post.

• All car insurances must cover travel while in the EU. HOWEVER that cover while travelling in the EU could well be the minimum cover required which is 3rd party.

If you have fully comprehensive in the UK it is worth checking you have the same cover while say driving in France.
Many cheaper car insurance only give the min cover.

On the car insurance front, I have only ever had one policy that automatically extended full cover abroad and that was through a specialist broker. The policy I have now (Sainsburys), and most of my others, charge a not inconsiderable fee to extend full cover abroad. If I don't pay the extra, I only have third party once I set whells on the continent.

I checked my policy this morning (with Admiral) and it confirms that when you remain in the EU you automatically have the same level of cover as if the car was in the UK.

"Am I insured to travel abroad?

Your policy gives you the cover described in your current Certificate of Motor Insurance for events occurring in:

Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and Channel islands

Any other country which is a member of the European Union

Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Croatia


The car is covered whilst it is being transported by air, sea or rail between those countries.

Your policy automatically includes a FREE International Motor Insurance Certificate (which you will find on the back of your current Certificate of Motor Insurance) for a maximum of 30 consecutive days in any one trip up to a maximum of 90 days in a year. The International Motor Insurance Certificate is only valid for the above named countries and there is no need to call us if you are taking your car to any of these countries but you do need to take your Certificate of Motor Insurance. However, should you wish to travel to any country not included in the above list please call us and we may, in some instances, be able to issue a Green Card for you.

If you need to travel to Andorra please call us on 0871 882 0000 as you will need to take a Green Card along with your Certificate of Motor Insurance to travel to these countries. Please note, the authorities in these countries will not accept photocopies of Green Cards as evidence of minimum insurance.

Calls to 0871 numbers will be charged at 8p per minute from BT Landlines. Calls from mobiles and other networks may vary.

If you do need to contact us to request a Green Card, please remember to leave plenty of time for your Green Card to arrive in the post."

Many of us have full cover while in the EU. Mine is unlimited cover yes 365 days I can drive fully comp in France or any other EU country. (because I am old and with Saga lol)

BUT many of you if you check will not have the same cover as you do in the UK.

Green Cards for the EU are not required only for countries outside the EU.
