Ok ive stumbled upon the idea, I have a 2001 M5 and want a similar car with less miles. So £15k seems to able to get me a 2006 s - type R.

Whats to watch for and what to expect? apart from a small boot

Have a read through the EVO report

http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/cargrouptests/1970...

I own a STR and have driven the M5, I'd say you will cover the ground quicker in the STR, it certainly suprised me. You sit lower in the Jag IMO, the interior is a bit dated but it's a comfortable place to be.

Performance, well not a huge amount in it, the Jag is a lazy engine that just pulls and pulls and pulls, the M5 sounds far nicer however.

Obvious biggest difference is auto only on the Jag, it's a nice box mind and to be honest I wouldn't have it any other way now, but you will either love it or hate it.

Mine has always been parked on my drive, Brum and now Warwickshire, the STR is less obvious than the M5 and I pay around 340 quid for insurance.

Hi. I've had a S Type R for the last 4 years - bought it with 9k on the clock, 2 yrs old - it now has 115k.....for the previous 3 years I had a 1989 M5 - bought with 50k miles, sold with about 120k.....so if you have any specific questions I think I can answer them....overall they're (surprisingly) quite similar cars. As has been said, the jaguar has a lazier engine and does feel a little more sure foooted (surprisingly)

The M5 has a higher quality interior (nicer leather). The auto box in the STR is very good, and you soon get used to it (didn't think I would at first). The STR has been cheaper to run. In the STR you can keep the sport button on all the time, in the M5 you have to remember to turn it on every time you drive the car. The first weekend I had the M5 a local yoof fell to his knees on the pavement and worshipped the M5.....never happened in the STR....the STR had a leaking expansion tank that needed three goes at fixing, the M5 went in for a regular service with no apparent problems and came out 4 weeks later with an new engine block (under extended warranty!!)

I could go on....Overall I was happy going from an M5 to an STR..but if you've got any specific questions please fire away

I'm confused? The E39 didn't start production until 2000?

Hmmm.....might be my memory fade - It was originally on a W plate - which is indeed 2000. I think you're right - W reg M5 Blue, black leather interior, 2000, not 1999!

Thanks

I have had an 06 plate for around 6 months now and love it. Only downside for me is the MPG which I cant get above an average of 16. Still pisses me off every time I fill it up at £1.20 per, costs me £75 and I get around 250 miles out of it.........

The car itself is superb, as others have said it just doesnt stop pulling and although the interior is small for such a big car its a nice pace to be. So far it has been problem free but I am lucky that I got a good one.

For the money I think they are a great car!

You stuck in traffic all the time or something ?

In the 50k I've done in mine easily averaged 22 / 23 mpg, infact now the Wife uses it most of the time she has been averaging 26 mpg. Best over a long motorway run of 180 miles I managed 35mpg.

The problem I found is as soon as you are stuck in traffic or do lots of round town driving the mpg really does drop considerably.

35mpg!?! are we talking about the same car? - never had more than 22 out of mine (on a good day) currently city driving only and display reads 16.8mpg. To be fair mpg at the time of buying was not really an issue although now am about to commute 300 miles a week so am looking for something a bit less juicy.

I have been running mine for 3 years and crunched a fair few miles, its a 52 plate and to date have had ZERO problems with it, the thing seems to be bullet proof. I like the auto and the supercharger sounds cool but have had my time with it now and want to return to a manual. All in all the jag has possibly been the most reliable, comfortable and one of the quickest cars i have owned but if i were honest its a touch on the boring side and funnily enough when i made my purchase it was between the jag or an M5!

ok ive seen three and driven two, and to be honest im not excited (sorry). I had a real country road stink with one, and boy it does pull and the auto box was lovely the brakes quite viscious, but very good....

The boot was too small and shallow, and i know the wife would moan if she had to sit in the back. Im 6'1' and theres no way she would fit behind me, even as a passenger on the front seat my knees touched the dashboard.....we have a 2 yr old and she sometimes sits in the back..

wheres the V8 sound? new XF and XK's sound the nuts this stype is very muted....

Also on the run i did find coming off the power (after full power) a little worrying, as it doesnt have an LSD the car lifts and slightly twists - like a merc, which gives me high speed worries.....but overall it is nice but I dont feel that its the car for me...

..and the nail really is, it feels and looks old inside and out....

i feel kind of dissapointed with my findings as its a good value car, but its just mildly ticking boxes.....i want more......

my search for an M5 replacement continues....

thanks for all on the info and help..

I think that about sums it up, it definitely needs a LSD, paramount performance offer some pretty good type r suspension and exausts choices to settle the car and give you back the V8 noise but as for a M5 replacement i think you will always be looking for something that little bit more.

Not sure if it would be an M5 replacement but if your looking for V8 grunt why not check a Monaro 6.0ltr VXR with all the Wortec goodies? Not quite german precision but great fun if you fancy getting sideways on the odd track day!

I previously owned an E39 M5 from new a few years ago and had some other stuff since.

I've had my 2002 STR for two years and 50,000 miles now and become a bit of a Jag convert as a result.

Bought it from an older gentleman with only 18K on the clock. Day to day I get about 23mpg, motorways 26-29 mpg, if I'm really enjoying an empty country road I've had it down to 9.8mpg. Been round the ring in it (not great TBH) and topped out at 167 GPS verified mph on the Autobahn.

It is the best all-rounder I've owned, great steering, good ride, slightly soft suspension but still a lot of fun on an open road. Like the M5 the brakes suffer a bit with some hard use.

Currently having a bit of a nightmare with some vibration under braking having had new stoppers all round, seems to be some worn suspension bushes rather than warped discs as I thought, but other than that and a couple of minor niggles its been top notch, if a little pricey to be maintained at a main dealer.

My summary would be:

M5 better for:
- nicer noise
- proper manual box
- styling and interior (although obviously subjective)

STR better for:
- Cruising
- Steering
- Value for money
- Reliability (really)

Go for it, they're cool!
