Just a thought - SNL is one of the most influential comedy shows in the US, being a stepping stone for some of the best US comedians and comedy actors over the past 20 years.

Why do no UK channels show the program?

because the assumption is most brits wouldnt watch it - hence why seinfield was on at 2am yet the biggest sitcom in the world.....why The (US) Office is not shown here yet is massive in the states and is making Gervais/Merchant millions in syndication....and why letterman/leno/daily show dont get a proper look in here despite being must see TV over there.

MOST brits wouldnt watch it.

It was on one of the ITV channels for while last year, they ran it late on a Saturday night a week after it was on 'live'.

Fair enough.

However I would comment that The (US) Office is shown on British TV and so was Family Ties.

I beg to differ, Family Ties was shown here, it's just never been repeated ad nauseum on sky.

The Office (US) is shown on Comedy Central

I recall SNL being shown here late 80's, and it was late night broadcast, and I found it to be more miss than hit

And on ITV4 too - albeit I only found it listed at stupid o'clock in the morning, and only then by chance, so unless there is a more mainstream viewing time as well it can't possibly get any meaningful amount of viewers.

Which is a shame as it's really very good.....

I remember watching Family Ties.

Ps. We also had our own Friday Night and Saturday Night live comedy shows, hosted by Ben Elton and introducing us to the likes of Harry Enfield (Stavros & Loadsamoney), Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie, The Dangerous Brothers (Rik Mayall & Ade Edmonson) even Hale & Pace.
