Frequent oil changes - need to do the filter as well..
Discussion
I change the oil in my car either after each track day i do (2 - 3) per year, or every 5000 miles. I think the recommended service interval on my car is every 12k.
Do i need to change the filter each time as well.. or can i get away with leaving it in and changing it every other time.
I obviously can afford spending £7 on a filter each time, but find it to be a pain in the butt to change it each time.

You are doing no harm by not changing it every time you change the oil. Factor in the time it takes to fill the filter on the first start with a fresh filter and you maybe doing less harm.
On some cars it's possible to fill the filter with oil before you fit it, of course there's lots of cars that's not possible.varsas said:

TBH I wouldn't (and don't) do it after every trackday but if it's a pain to change, get a better tool to do it with. I'd say do it half as often, but do the full job.
I dont understand why you wouldnt change it after every track day? If your pushing the engine hard for a full day then doesn't the oil loose some of it lubrication properties?Edited by winshent on Wednesday 12th May 09:29

I was going to say this but i have never encountered a car that you can't pre fill them....
Apart from every car that uses the paper element filters? Which is most modern cars...Personally I do the filter as well on mine because it is a piece of piss to get to and roll off and costs less than £2. But I appreciate what you mean when oil filters are in a PITA place, made ten times harder when you are doing it on the floor as opposed to a ramp.
My Mondeo is the first "bean tin" type car I've owned. Every other car has had the paper element type.

The screw on metal cannister is virtually obsolete now on modern cars. Has been for years.
Well you learn something every day! Any pictures of what is now the norm? The Focus RS the OP refers to will be like mine without doubt-screw on metal canister.Dave_ST220 said:
