A novel idea to pay off the national debt?

So the nation currently owns a large portion of a couple of banks. Instead of using the tax revenue to pay off the national debt could it not use the trading arm of the banks and a portion of the tax revenue to play the markets? A sovereign deficit reduction fund rather than a wealth fund.

I would not be very comfortable with that.

Imagine the government was the wrong side of the NYSE stocks and S&P drop seen on Friday of last week.

Or if Winky was in charge of it... he would announce to the world a few days before that he would be investing in gold and watch the stock price triple in those few days, wait for him to buy it then off load the lot...
