A 'Friend' of mine is huffing and puffing about Labour being booted out as he'll be worse off, blah blah, tax rises, blah blah. I work with him and we both earn the same, pretty much average UK wage. How can I convince him that his life long love of Labour is completely wrong. Looking for a website with stealth tax breakdown, possible future taxes, etc. Oh, he's a union member through choice too, so I think all may be lost!

Just tell him, no matter who won this election, taxes were always going to go up.

And the reason for that is thanks to Labours 13years of cock-ups!

But as you said, it will probably be wasted breath. Some people just can't accept the truth.

In answer to your question though, I think we're all waiting to find out exactly what a Con-Dem coalitions means to us.

Has your friend got kids? If so then ask him to compare how much money he has in his pocket against some single parent family in the same area? I suspect, right or wrong, that the single parent will have more disposable income than the working man - certainly seems to be the case around here.

One family I know actually is worse off by working..... and tell me that's fair?

Yes taxes will go up for him but its funny that he has bought so effectively into the Labour propaganda that the Tory's were a party of tax rises. Nope thats ALWAYS been Labour while tory's try to reduce tax.
CMD has only said he would raise tax since the deficit began to rise faster than anyone thought possible.

They simply can't cut tax now, thanks to Labour.

Does seem to be the way. He's part of that "My old man voted Labour, so I will. Torys are for the rich man, workers unite!" Incredible how many are like it though. As I was leaving work yesterday I heard somebody from another department say, and I quote "That's it then, they cancel bus passes, tax credits, increase taxes. It's a rich mans party" You couldn't make it up, and that's from people in employment (in pretty good, secure, private sector jobs TBH)

I'd go along with this - agree violently with him. He's absolutely right, it will get worse.
Then point out that the country now has a mortgage to pay off. We need to pay the interest and start paying back the original loan. And we need to find the thick end of £200bn each year to pay it. Two hundred billion pounds. Closing the NHS wouldn't cover it. Stopping all benefits wouldn't fund it. Ask him where the money should come from. Whatever he suggests will not scratch the surface.

In 1997, the mortgage was costing us £0. Nada. Zip.
