If you were looking at a bill of £500 to get a car worth £2000 through an MOT, is it worth it?

If you were to sell the car with no MOT needing £500 of work what would you get for it??? Not £2000!

If you spend the £500 and keep the car for another couple of years, as long as its a good reliable runner then its probably worth doing.

Whats up with it by the way?

Depends what the car means to you and it's purpose.
It isn't worth much without the MOT anyway.
So, if the rest is ok, it's £500 for another year's use.

This.

Allegedly cars cost on average a minimum of £500 per year to run anyway.

Not to mention it's better the devil you know with ropey cars.

I'd say yes, it's worth it. Keeps you motoring and that.

Could you get another (similar) car from the funds raised if sold the existing car as it is now (no MOT)?

Based on purely financial considerations only if it enhances its value by at least £500.

£2000 for a car with a new MOT.

£1500 for a car that needs "£500" of repairs.

I'd prefer to buy the former.

I'd agree.

If you are running it as a banger then its a no brainer, cost to keep going < Cost to replace, unless you know of none MOT failure bills around the corner.
