I don't have kids and yet this sickens and upsets me enormously.
Honestly, what drives this sort of thinking?

There is something so completely wrong with this story, how does a 10 year old even know about this and how to do it?

At least it has got to court.....lots of times, things like this (or at least attempted sexual assaults by under 13's) go no further than a wrist slapping.

Ask Venables or Thompson.....I believe they inflicted some sort of abuse to their victim. Apparantly from watching 'horror' flicks.....extend this sick thought and there you go.

Alledgedly.

I don't think I even knew what sex was at primary school, let alone rape...

Did these type of events not happen in earlier times?

Probably, but if we pretend that pre 1997 the world was a sunny place where nothing bad ever happened we can blame this kind of thing on new labour and broken Britian...

st, i've been on this forum too long, the nasty smell of extreme right wingyness has rubbed off, oh no I can't escape, AAAAAAAARRRRGGGGG.............laugh

Well, my understanding is that children could be married at 11 and 12, but then they died a lot earlier too.

And yes, the rape of children was not uncommon - I believe that Boadicea's (sp?) girls were raped by the Romans (7 and 9-10 or so I think) which is why she got a touch upset and went off to kill loads of Romans.. I think her Army left the very next day after her kids were raped.

It's nothing to do with "right wingyness". It's all to do with the fact that such events now get national and intensive media coverage - so we can't escape it.

There always were and always will be shockingly awful events - but these days they land right into our living room with all the graphic and nasty details explained. Also, the media expresses itself in very emotive terms. We are encouraged to feel for and empathise with the victims so that we get involved in a way that, in past decades, we would not have done.

I am never comfortable with thtread titles which start with "What is the world coming to?". My granny (who was born in 1890 and died 30 years ago) used to say things like that when we were kids.

To some degree the headlines are part of the cause, it's known as the deviancy amplification spiral. Witness the current stabbings in China - had the first incident not been reported is it even remotely plausible there'd have been another 4 more?*

Heck, even suicides go up after there's been a prominent one reported.

Three things spring to mind:

1 - Post with "what is the world coming to" show the OP to have a limited understanding of current times relative to those in the past.

2 - "Now" is always a better time to raise kids and i cant think of a time when that would not have been true (and it will always be true for many years yet.

3 - The kids was 8 with a YOUNGER sister in her care. As a dad of 4 i have always let them play out of the house (we back onto fields) but my theory has always been that they should be within ear shot. Only when the eldest got to age 11 was she able to go off with mates and her younger bro (8). Theres a bog jump from "wrap them in coton wool" to "let an 8 yr old off on their own with a younger sibling in their care" and thats the same now as in the 70/80's when i grew up.

Just said on BBC the victim made it all up, because she was worried she wouldn't get sweets.

Ordinarily that would be a piss boiler, but in this case I can't help but feel relieved.

In 1997 it was just about starting... in the 80s (my generation) we would never dream of doing the st that happens now, let alone think it was normal and get away with it.
