1.8 TDCI ford focus 100 PS, 2003 registration

- Lost pulling power, rarely puts me into my seat, used to all the time, its very selective and getting worse/slower

- hard starting in the morning if it has been left parking uphill, then when started emits grey smoke, if parked downhill however it is fine

-when engine is warm and it is started it makes a 0.5 second clatter as the engine engages then sounds very healthy once engine is idling (been told its the dual mass flywheel, but has been like this for 3 months and not got any worse?)

could the dual mass flywheel cause any loss in power? i cant afford to fix it yet, is the power loss likely to be due to this due to the camshaft sensor syncronizing with the flywheel?, is the starting parked uphill to do with this or something else?

MPG seems ok but i never do economy runs, get between 35-40 around town and fast motorway driving

no engine light on etc, give the egr a good blast on the motorway and cleaned it out myself - didnt make any difference

Could be dirty fuel (not a comment about being a diesel!) or perhaps something partially blocking the line/filter? That might explain the noise when starting (do diesels have pumps?) if it is working harder to push/pull fuel through. Might also explain loss of power and would almost certainly result in stty smoke being thrown out.

Disclaimer - I'm no mechanic and am basing this purely on my own warped style of logic!!!

You need to spend some money and get a proper diagnosis, not internet guesses.

From my experience (2000 1.8 TD Mondeo)

-Hard starting, just from cold? When were the glow plugs last changed? Try a couple of times pre-heating the cylinders. Thats putting the ignition on and off a couple of times. I don't know the TDCI lump when, but it should be pretty similar. Could also check if you're getting a voltage on the glow plug rail.

-Loss of power, could be a number of things. Gradual build up of oil and muck in the intercooler, blocked or knackered fuel/air filter. What did the service consist of? Everything changed?

-DMF generally feels like a nasty vibration about mid clutch pedal travel, which gets worse. Also can effect the starter motor and the ring gear is fitted on the edge of it. If you think it could be that, get it checked out at a clutch clinic as it can add up if you just ignore it (new starter motor etc..) They often recommend changing the clutch at the same time.

hope that helps.

Check the boost hoses and the intercooler (for cracks), could be a boost leak.

You've asked this same question in February, March, April and now May. Is it a test? Get it to a garage smile

all the garages near me have a st reputation, or they only specialise in exhausts and tyres, every other garage is ridiculously busy on the weekend, the only time i can take it in,

i want to get an idea so i can suggest to the garage what it may be and they can then check

btw could a loose or clogged fuel filter allow air into the fuel lines? parking my car uphill makes it hard to start in the morning, parking it downhill makes it start first time easily

Look in the Yellow Pages (or Google) for diesel specialists. Seriously, do it. You have waited several months on here with the fault, so having to wait a few days to book it into the right people shouldn't hurt. They can check in minutes things that it would take you hours to do. Turbo efficiency, pipe leaks, fuel pressure, lift pump capability, injector pump wear etc.
