Hello Wise PH'ers

I am relatively new to this but have a dilemma i hope you can all help me with.

I'm 17 and own a Vauxhall Astra 1.8 16v.. It currently average's 33mpg which to be honest i'm finding hard to justify. I do 45-50 miles per day to work and back (i'm only an apprentice) and currently 2/5's of my wage is being spent at the pump alone..

Now i've only owned the car 2 months since upgrading from my corsa, and have stupidly spent a couple of hundred on coilovers and a few other tweeks hoping to make the car justify the low MPG. Its a hoot to drive (for me) sticks to corners and has plenty of throttle (keep in mind i used to drive a 1.2)

Anyway what other cars can i realistically insure at 17 that can return a similar MPG? If i were to change i would have a budget of about 3k, including the sale of my Astra (which i paid 2k for 2 months ago..)

I would think the car would have to be a diesel and under insurance group 9. I want to see as much MPG as possible! Fed up of wasting my small wage at Shell.

So any advice?

Apologies for being vague but i'm trying to vent some steam !

Cheers
Danny

Mk4 Golf 1.9TDI 100 Insurance group 8, 54mpg combined
FOCUS 1.8TDCI Ins 6, 51mpg
Peugeot 306 2.0HDI Ins 5, 54mpg

None of them will set the world on fire but all should do the job!

You solved it yourself.

Changing cars costs money. Every time. More than you'll save in quite a while at the pump.

Driving more carefully costs nothing.
