Is there a major problem with this?

Car has Magnatec 10w 40, what's the issue with topping up with same grade semi synthetic from a different manufacturer?

Shouldn't be an issue in my opinion.

My M3 uses a very specific 10w-60 oil, only made by Castrol.

Even so, the handbook still says it is ok to top up with a 5w-40 if 10w-60 isn't available.

Based on that, topping yours up with a different brand but same grade shouldn't be a problem at all.

I was hoping that would be the case.

But I popped onto the Opie Oils thread, and the amount of specific stuff on there quite confused me.

I've just had to mix Shell Helix with what remained of my Castrol Edge as no where seems to stock it now in Norfolk. I can onlt seem to find it in Germany. HAving said that, all BMW dealers in the UK have switched to Shell from Castrol.
