Evening all,

I'm almost in the market for a new weekend craft and on my shortlist is the Tamora. After owning a Chimaera 4ltr a few years ago (load of old st but I still loved the thing). I wanted to know a little more about the newer cars. Apologies if these have been asked before and if there's a thread where answers lie, let me know (looked a little in the general FAQ).

What's reliability like on the Tamora?

What are typical servicing costs?

Is there a buyer's guide?

For upgrades, what's the most common choices for:

Exhaust (which is best? or is it personal preference on noise etc)
Air filter
decats
others?

Any thoughts or information greatly appreciated. I'm aiming to view an 04 car next week.

Had my Tam for 18 months, reliable yes, only costs were a new Rad, HT leads & a stuck track rod adjuster. All the other money I spent on it was my choice.

Servicing is approx £400/£750 for 6k/12k services but something always needs doing so add a couple of hundred for pro-active repairs.

As for exhausts if you want to go deaf and p*ss the neighbours off try Racing Greens' super sport cans. De-cat pipes will also change the noise.

No air filter as such but the carbon ACT airbox with carbon trumpets looks sexy but at £1000 its not cheap (santa take note for this xmas....)

Other mods are extensive; shocks, wheels, diff, gearbox etc. Decent head lights are always useful I went down the HID route for about £100.

To be honest my advise would be to buy a solid car (get it inspected or buy from a respected dealer) run it and enjoy!. Service it well so it is reliable, then worry about adding the bling bits.

Oh yes I almost forgot. Treat it nice and warm her up before giving it beans. If you drive it like you stole it from cold its going to fail fairly quick.

Why not come to Dunsfold at the weekend? there willbe a good TVR turn out there for you took have a look at and ask questions.

Thanks Shep,

This weekend is a no go for me I'm afraid.

The only things I'd consider changing would be filter, cans, cats to be honest. I have a Simota Racing Carbon box on my Mk4 R32 and it sounds the nuts...so the ACT jobbie sounds very interesting.

For exhausts there's TVR Power and JP/D? are they the better items to go for...BlueFlame for some reason seems inferior (just my opinion of the brand from what I've seen on Youtube etc)

Exhausts are all about noise & 'bangs/pops' on the over-run, IIRC they offer no power gain over std maybe even a little less? There is a weight saving, my RG cans are significantly lighter than the std exhaust.

I think the order of 'loudness' & 'Bangs' runs like this

TVR Power (Racing green cans are essentially the same)
JP
Blue Flame

Regarding the airbox not sure if this will give you a noise enhancement or not. Being expesive you don't see many but there are a few out there somebody will be along to comment. There is a power/torque gain I believe if fitted with the trumpets & re-map chip

I all about the bangs and pops (and flames). TVR Power it would be then.

Those ACT carbon boxes and trumpets look fantastic, bound to save a little weight there and I believe the carbon fibre actually has a cooling effect after seeing an Escort Cosworth with a cf inlet manifold that was cold to the touch after much abuse. My Golf roars due to the resonator chamber (the cf bit).

Again thanks for the reply.
