How do I remove colour and blur the background of a photo (now the tricky bit)that can be see through a brides veil.

I have created layers,
removed the colour from one
selected only the Bride and Groom on another

the black and white layer (background layer) has been blurred but I can still see sharp colour through the brides veil.
It is this that I want to correct.

any ideas?

A sharp colour veil over a blurred b/w background... hmm... dunno, I don't use artifical blur.

Maybe someone cleverer than me can help, but you may have stepped on a photographic rake there!

Can you not mask out the veil as another layer, convert it to B&W, and maybe increase the contrast slightly to separate the white of the veil against the background?

With a background as blurred as you've made it, you wouldn't see any detail of the person behind through the veil anyway, so i would just use the clone brush on the veil intself to take out the offending bits.

I would probably try blurring/desaturating that bit of veil, then in another layer clone from a "clean" bit of veil on top of that and find the right opacity.

No idea if it would work, but hopefully would leave you with clean veil and a little bit of soft/B&W background detail behind it.

Alternatively, this took 10 seconds. One swipe of the "Healing Tool" in The Gimp:

Like this? Very very easy, don't try and over complicate it. Brush tool, set to colour with black as the selected colour. Brush over the areas you want B+W, then select the blur tool, and brush over the areas you want blurred but do not cross the edge of the veil so it stays 'crisp'.

Use a layer mask on the top layer to select the bride and groom.
It would be a good chance to try out the new Refine Edges/Mask feature in CS5.

Thanks I'll give it a go.
