I assume a large manufacturer can inflate sales figures and offset some tax/VAT liability in the process but are there any other reasons for this practice?

I seem to remember the rules were tightened recently, what are the current conditions and limitations of this practice?

Demos and pre reg's go towards there sales targets so e.g 5 pre regs may be the difference between getting a 200k dealer sales bonus or not

Cars need to be available for various people to try, punters, corporate buyers, press etc.

Yes obviously, but manufacturers have registered way more than they needed for years, I'm pretty sure there was some tightening of the rules regarding this.

They also "lease" cars to employees so get registrations that way?
