Time to get rid of Regional Development Agencies?

Right, crunch time is here and this lot of non-jobbers are costing about £2B a year. Do they actually achieve any of their aims?
Down here in X, it seems that some local big-guns have got on the board of things and rather than actually encouraging business, sustainable development, acting now on CO2, their sites stand empty for ages until a local property company builds on the site. (The chief being on the board).
There is another wheeze where a local company who fix/maintain/fuss over power lines seem to sell the RDA bits of land in various places for utterly unbelievable sums of money (out of the magic pot) which then stand idle and you guessed it.... turn into XXXXX estates.
I reckon it's time to stop this nonsense. Another 10% added onto the EU running costs that we are pissing up the wall.
What do you think, fire them or keep them?

I have been saying this for years and years. The EEDA (East of England) is just a self back slapping utter waste of money that either hands out awards or promotes how wonderful they really are.
Helping small business
nope. I found them more of a hinderance.
Never seen the point of moving money from point A to point B with a go-between. It just reminds me of Father Teds 'Money was just resting in my account'
I hope they are dispatched ASAP but can anyone really see this happening? No? Neither can I.

They have far too many buzzwords in their remit for them to be sacked. Helping small business

The SWRDA is utterly unbelievable. It knows best and it just gets on with something, whether it be compulsory land purchase, building an industrial estate next to a half empty existing one.....just waiting for X Homes to be given the green light.
The ultimate public sector parasite. If you could cross a seagull and a virus, it would be getting towards them!
RDA's are simply "jobs for the boys", as long as you are a well connected boy that is.
They are there simply to spread vast amounts of government money, ie our cash, about whilst skimming the funds to pay for their greatly overpaid jobs, whilst providing consultancy work to their mates who then tell everyone what a superb job the RDA is doing thus perpetuating the myth.
Companies that do attempt to get investment help from these agencies, such as Business Link, have to use an "approved" consultancy, and pay half the consultancy fees with Busniess Link paying the remaining half.
Thus the only practical outcome of these agencies is to part fund hordes of otherwise unemployable "consultants" whilst forcing companies looking for help to shell out much needed cash on generally useless consultancy projects.
They are a typical labour "Big Government" idea, not wanted, not effective, very costly, stuffed full of "non jobs" and just a drain on both government coffers and business creativity.
All the above I have gathered from three seperate "projects", in three different companies, being a member of various consultancy professional organisations and from contacts within RDA's themselves.
Get rid, they won't be missed. Invest the money saved in scientific research within the UK, with any resulting innovations to be wholly developed and manufactured within the UK.
Cheers,
Tony

Dont get me started on them. They also like to 'shuffle' money about as well.Companies that do attempt to get investment help from these agencies, such as Business Link, have to use an "approved" consultancy, and pay half the consultancy fees with Business Link paying the remaining half.
