As the title says - which is better, more interesting? Is the autobahn derestricted down in that corner of Germany? Part of a longer roadtrip to Rome and back - can't wait!!

Germany every time - unrestricted and IIRC three lanes too.

Watch out for Swiss millionaires in Lambos and Ferraris
doing over 250 kph.

France has toll roads, Germany doesn't.

Not many tolls on that stretch of road. Last autumn I took the Germany option going South - tons of roadworks and lots of trucks made for slow progress. On the way home I took the French option, nice and clear and easy cruise (but obviously not derestricted). Given the choice I'd take the French option to miss the traffic.

I recently drove through Strasbourg to Basel (and back!) en route to/from Luxembourg>><<Verbier for our skiing holiday.

Too many scameras on the French roads. I'd suggest Germany, although if you're using SatNav it will likely direct you through France as being the shorter/quicker route.

Don't forget, just becuase you'd be in Germany and on Autobahns, not all of them are unrestricted, certain sections may have 130km/h speed limits in place, particularly in daylight hours. cop
(Hence why I drove my car from Rostock to Luxmebourg a couple of year ago, late at night and flat out! driving )

depends what you prefer really - it's quite nice to blast down the autobahns every now and then but it can get a bit dull and tiring if thats all you're going to do. The scenery is nicer IIRC, the facilities when you need a break are much better than the french autoroute equivalent. On the french side of things I find it more relaxing but there are very strategically placed cameras on the largely deserted routes- but the french are great for warming you with a flash of the lights etc. The seemingly endless tolls are a pain in the butt.....
Germany on the way down and french on the way back? Enjoy it!

A large part of that stretch of the A5 around Freiburg is restricted to 120. It's bloody annoying.

The rest of it is territory that allows for real speed when traffic is light.

Agreed - I'd forgotten that most of the A5 'bahn South of
Freiburg is limited.

And when it's not so light. I've seen some horrendous
tailgating at 180 kph in the area.

Less than one car's length between an Audi and a 911. Horrible.
