I am looking to buy a car to use when I am at home for pleasure, not commuting as I work overseas 28/28, ideally pre Jan 1st 1980 to qualify for classic and thoroughbred status in sprints/hillclimbs. Not necessarily a class winning car but one I could have fun with on track as well as the road.

Oh and under 5K (ish), or I would have an Elan.

I am thinking
Mini
TVR M Series
Porsche 924
MGB
Alfa

There must be others.

id also consider
- BMW 323 (e21) or 2002Ti
- Imp
- austin healey
- some kind of Datsun 160/280 are they 70s?
- Triumph dolamite sprint - 16v

id favour the BMW

No mention of any Fords?

Fords were epic on the track in the 70's / 80's.

Capri 2.8
Escort (RS1600 / RS2000)

A lot of fun, cheap to run. Plentiful spare parts.

Only downside is can be a bit pricey to buy a good one.

But for purely track use - plenty out there.

RS1600........ on a 5k budget roflroflrofl

I'd look at a TR7 with a Rover V8 conversion, as pressumably that would be eligble as a TR8.

Lots of fun, shouldn't be too expensive, quite a few converted cars out there to choose from.

TVR 3000M is a good call, but is that possible with a 5k budget...?

I meant the MK II variety - not MK III - which takes you into turbo territory...

Early 1600's would have had a Kent engine, and the 2000 would have had the Cologne OHC IIRC.

Tony, have you seen the price of classic Escorts recently?
Mark I or II??
£5000 will probably get you a brown 1.6 GL 4 door with some spot lights on the front.

I would agree sadly. Maybe MG Midget might be worth a look? Or rubber bumper MGB?
Certainly have a mega spares back up at reasonable prices.

A basic road car as the basis for a project probably is.

The M-Series does need a bit of work to handle properly though. Plenty of people have done it though, along with V8 conversions, Cosworth lumps, you name it...

Could get a 944 (as against 924) although a 924S isn't bad, as that has the 2.5 engine.

I've seen 944 Turbos for under 5k, can also get the 16 Valve version for around the £4k mark.

What about an older Mazda RX8? That's also RWD.

+1 for a 2002. Great fun to drive, reasonably fast for their age and really good parts availability
