A friend was asking what car he should buy for up to £10k, fairly cheap to run, but look like it's worth a shed load more. He's looking to meet the wrong kind of lady (and no it's not really me biggrin )

I came up with the following:

Mercedes CLK (either model)
Alfa GTV (98-04 model)
BMW 320 cd (e46)
Audi Cabriolet

Any other thoughts ?

If she's a dumb blonde; a later Hyundai Coupé might work.

Boxster S.

When I had my 51 plate, people were like OMG you rich bd how can you afford one of those?

When I retorted with "I paid less than you did for your Focus stbox" I was met with some incredulity.

Therefore - the answer is - Boxster.

People seem to think that my TVR 400SE is an expensive car where as in reality it is worth next to nothing.

..or XK Jags too.

Even to the trained eye, looks more than a £6,500 car! And you can get them even cheaper, without the rag top.

I would rather have a Boxster myself..

Sadly, I just showed that picture to my mother and asked how much she thought it was worth... she said £5000. She knows nothing about cars. I even told her it was a jaguar!

(and dont mock my mother, i will have to destroy you.)

Sounds like your mother must be a trader behind your back...buying and selling old Jags. rofl I think she's quoted the trade price!

Tell your mum she'd just gone and ruined my theory smile

That 3200GT is good but fails on running costs.
Alfa Brera's are down to 10k now, or for less an alfa 166 is a good one too. Both these cars are stylish outside and inside, a key factor. Not too many females are impressed by rock hard, noisy performance cars they can hardly get in/out of.

Yeah, I agree with that.

Just the other day, I bumped into an old work colleague who exclaimed "Oooh, this is a bit posh isn't it?!"

I found myself getting a little embarassed at this and just replied "Not really, they're relatively inexpensive these days" (mine is a 2001 model).

Another time I was out with my girlfriend (not long met her at the time) and she was obviously very impressed with the car. I decided to bring a bit of realism to the situation and told her what I'd paid for it.

She was amazed when it turned out to be pretty much same amount she had just paid for her 09 plate Corsa 1.2 SXi.

I was sat outside my girlfriends house with the roof down and a guy walked up and said "nice car mate, one day I'll have one of those". I said thanks and watched him walk off and get into a 59 plate Golf.
