I've always been a fan of steam power, mainly railways ect. I find it relaxing just watching the locomotives and being pulled by the immense things is quite fun. The noise, engineering, smell and nostalgic air appeal to me, does anyone else like a good old taste of steam? smile

I live close to the Severn Valley Railway near Bewdley, Worcestershire. Must admit, I do enjoy going there. They are amazing things to see and hear.

I seem to remember a few years ago house owners complaining about the noise and steam from a preserved railway running at the bottom of their gardens when it was extended.Local estate agent pointed out that it added(!) value to the properties, complaints stopped. It's the noise which sets my pulse racing.Spent the day riding the Keithley&Worth Valley railway recently and the climb out of Keithley on a damp rail was hard work for the engine but a great show for us punters!

We all went to Bo'ness this weeekend for a "Day Out With Thomas" (the tank engine, for those of you without young children!).

Great time was had by all and the wee man loved the steam whistle noise and the whoosing of the steam.... Mrs Foilist wasn't too impressed by the smoke though!

I love steam engines, but the best, by definition is hard to beat.

Sunny day, quiet inland coastal waters, pint of beer, small steam launch.

i think one of the nice things about steam powered trains is you can see the workings! its much more pleasing to the engineering eye.

I think the nmodern diesel trians very boring. Its like looking under the boneet of a modern high performacne car, you cant see anything! lol

Not the same now though are they? With the Paxmans they used to give me goosebumps.

But yes I love steam things more.

Bloody brilliant! Good to see some enthusiasts on here!! I agree they're not the same at all anymore. Still can have a ride on a 'proper' one between Kings Cross and Sunderland (not for much longer though!!) Lovely lovely old Paxmans.....

If you want to see one running again with a Paxman, I suggest you take a look at http://www.125group.org.uk

I did a steam engine driving course a few years back. The best birthday pressie ever. It surprised me the sheer deftness of hand required to run smoothly what was in effect a small saddle tank. The smell of fine steaming coal infuded with lubricating grease and steam is utterly delicious.

Literally. Steam oil contains a small amount of tallow, so it's the slight scent of hot beef dripping... nom cloud9

Just saw the Duchess of Sutherland leaving Crewe this morning with a significant number of carriages behind her (15 IIRC). Was a lovely sight to see and hear.
Sorry for the old pic, as her new livery is all black apparently for boiler certification testing this year.

Just reading up a little on her, and the Princess Royal class was quite remarkable in its day. They were all built in Crewe, and I reckon my granddad must have driven them at some point...

I've been over to Brixworth from Northampton this morning and there were a heck of a lot of cars parked at a railway bridge in the middle of the countryside and lots of folk around with cameras - I wonder if it was coming that way.
